I am really thankful for this book. I ordered it last January, after getting over the flu for the second year in a row. My immune system seemed shot, and I knew I needed to make a serious change. I researched candida, then I researched books and I went with this one. It really spells everything out for you and gives good explanations. As with any change, the diet changes and supplements were overwhelming at first. So, just in case it is useful for anyone getting started, the suggested supplements that I went with were:(Chapter 7, 90 day program)1. Herbal Antifungal - I went with pau d'arco (Gaia tincture; Vitamin Shoppe or Nature's Way tablets when out) because of a ginger allergy, so I was limited. There are other options in the book.2. Repair-Vite (herbs and amino acids to repair intestinal tract) - I substituted with BioGenesis Intestinal Repair Complex (iherb.com), mentioned later in the book. (Now, almost a year later, I take Jarrow L-glutamine morning and night and some of the other ingredients in the repair formula)3. Vitamin C: I used Metagenics Ultra Potent-C 1000 tablets but I noticed some ingredients that I didn't like recently.4. I used Gaia Milk Thistle seed extract instead of the Gallblader or Liver abX5. Vitamin E: Jarrow familE. The recommended Country Life Chelated molybdenum really worked to eliminate naseau from this supplement.6. Digestive Enzymes: Couldn't find one that made a big difference for me. I've heard great things about Enzymedica Digest Gold from other people.7. Flaxseed: Bob's Red Mill as recommended8. Red Clover Tea: ordered in bulk from the Mountain Rose Herbs website as recommended. Very happy with it and I continue to order the Red Clover and other teas from them.9. Molybdenum : Country Life Chelated molybdenum: alleviates die-off systems. I thought this supplement was very good. So, that's what I used to get started as far as the supplements go and I went through them in this review in the hope that it might simplify things for someone else. When I first got started, the die-off symptoms were severe and definitely made me feel worse, but were very temporary - a week or less. As expected, I was very tired, achy, had severe carb cravings, and had a sore throat (and I'm sure more symptoms, this is what I remember from almost a year ago). Strangely, every time I ate for a while (at least a month), I would have a little bit of a sore throat. But, it was definitely worth it as my symptoms have improved greatly and my whole relationship with food has changed for the better. As for the noticeable improvements that I have experienced -- I get sick less and if I do get sick I get over it more quickly; less tired; my weight used to fluctuate, this isn't the case anymore and I am steady at an ideal weight; I don't get as bloated or exhausted as pms symptoms; sinus symptoms have improved, and many other improvements that I am not thinking of now.I had a lot of reservations going into this diet because I loved food, baking and eating out so much -- it was what I looked forward to the most. Now, I am not a slave to food like I used to be and my dietary preferences and habits have changed. (Just as an aside, I still bake using a lot of paleo recipes and ideas, minus the added sweetener, and I like it even more than I used to like conventional baking). Also, in case it is helpful, I found a lot of great candida diet friendly recipes from Paleo cookbooks - Against All Grain (see blog), Practical Paleo, the nom nom paleo blog, countless others, as well as from the conventional sites I always used. So, if you've gone through the trouble of reading my really long review, you're probably at the point where you are seriously considering taking the plunge, and probably NEED to take this plunge and follow this program. My advice, commit to it mentally and do it. You do have the will power - sugar (and wheat) are an addiction, we all experience it, the initial transition will not be easy but you can absolutely get through it and it really will be MUCH EASIER from then on out. Also, as I'm believe other reviewers have mentioned, its best to do this on your own. Also, you may encounter resistance from people close to you that have good intentions. Its threatening to people when you go against convention (conventional diet) -- labeling it as a "temporary detox" might make other people more comfortable with it and less judgmental. Hope this all helps. Good luck.

I will probably NOT be able to complete 90-day program from the start; I will have to take her option to slowly remove things from my diet. But her approach is balanced. She says to take ONE anti-fungal and lists several. I now take caprylic acid supplements and occasionally drink Pau d'Arco tea. In other words, she's not advancing a period of excess to see a quick response, but change over time and a plan for maintenance. A lot of what she recommends here is good nutrition. . . eat some types of grains but forego the ones that turn to sugar and are highly processed. But she explains why these recommendations apply to the growth of candida. What helped me the most were two things: her explanation of food combining is one of those. Having lost my gall bladder and now having to eat moderate to low fat foods, there was a risk for me of too many refined or starchy carbohydrates. She does not recommend removing carbohydrates completely, and sure, we all know that refined carbohydrates affect insulin levels; she explains why the good carbs are good. But I was about to pay $40 for a food-combining program, and now don't have to because she summed it up in one paragraph. She also says that your body asks for what it needs, and I am a firm believer in that. It also craves refined carbohydrates and sugars when your blood sugar surges low or high. I've learned to recognize a good craving from a bad one. She doesn't just say "eat this, don't eat that," but explains the mechanisms. I personally love legumes and beans, and never understood why the Atkins diet, which was successful for me when I had a gall bladder, limited beans, but she explains that even while legumes are high in protein, the carbohydrates in them are starches, and have the effect of refined carbohydrates. So now they are treats, once or twice a week. She also explains when and how often to eat fruit. So she just doesn't say what to leave out and what to leave in, but why, and her structure helps create moderation, so you don't feel deprived but you're not limited to just a handful of food groups. I now know I can eat brown rice, when in the past I thought that was off limits. The second thing that is helpful are the recipes. I tried one last night - spicy chicken and cabbage soup. It is a little bit more expensive for me when shopping to buy the things I need to make these recipes, but part of that was a re-stock of my cabinets; I eat at work and often plunk down $7 for a sandwich and chips and a cookie and a diet soda . . . most of which is feeding the candida. If I stop shelling out for fast food and spend my money on good food and prepare to take food with me to work, I'm sure the net effect on my budget will be the same. If you LIKE explanations for the consequences to your body of what you put into it, and WHY nutritionists recommend some foods and suggest eliminating or limiting others, this is your book.

Resurrection (Penguin Classics), by Leo Tolstoy

About the Author

Count Leo Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia. Orphaned at nine, he was brought up by an elderly aunt and educated by French tutors until he matriculated at Kazan University in 1844. In 1847, he gave up his studies and, after several aimless years, volunteered for military duty in the army, serving as a junior officer in the Crimean War before retiring in 1857. In 1862, Tolstoy married Sophie Behrs, a marriage that was to become, for him, bitterly unhappy. His diary, started in 1847, was used for self-study and self-criticism; it served as the source from which he drew much of the material that appeared not only in his great novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina(1877), but also in his shorter works. Seeking religious justification for his life, Tolstoy evolved a new Christianity based upon his own interpretation of the Gospels. Yasnaya Polyana became a mecca for his many converts. At the age of eighty-two, while away from home, the writer suffered a break down in his health in Astapovo, Riazan, and he died there on November 20, 1910.Anthony Briggs has written, translated, or edited twenty books in the fields of Russian and English literature.

This is a very strange version of Tolstoy. I suspect it is a computer generated translation. At any rate, do not buy it. After seeing how weird the language was, I ordered the classic version and compared the two. Amazon should not even sell this. It is outrageous. Tolstoy is great, but this is a substandard translation, and my understanding is that there is only one legitimate translation (Maude). So Amazon is selling a strange, probably computer generated and not legitimate version of a great book. Do read the book! Just not this one.

As the editor of Tolstoy’s Resurrection points out, Tolstoy published this novel late in life, and did so for the money. He had long given up writing, lived as a simple peasant like existence, and gave away the royalties to his books. Resurrection was written, or more correctly updated for publication from an older manuscript to support the emigration of a “heretic” Russian religious sect to Canada.Hence Resurrection, definitely a Tolstoy production, is a late work. The mastery of the form of the novel that we find in War and Peace and Anna Karenina is not present in this book. Yet despite this, Resurrection is a fascinating cluttered, confusing;novel; it is full of long ruminations on human nature, God, and government. So intense are these debates, that they are appealing. This dark vision of Russia this novel provides is unflinching. In its depictions of all social ills, corruption, crime, avarice, vice, economic injustice, indifference and inhumanity, the reader can see the roots of the Russian Revolution. The society of Resurrection could not continue as it was without a bloody upheaval. It was simply too hopeless and dark a place .So I imagine an older, shaggy Tolstoy, brimming with rage over the conditions in Russia, more than slightly misanthropic as a result, pouring out his social and religious theories and ideas while composing this novel. If this is kept in mind, then reading this novel becomes less of a chore and more of a delight. Here was an author with nothing more to prove; he used this novel for his social propaganda, with rich results.

The criticisms of this novel are largely misdirected. There are no more digressions or polemical passages than there are in War and Peace which, if one were to delete all of the pontification and historiography and theological interpretation, would probably be half as long as it is. The novel is inferior to War and Peace and Anna Karenina primarily because it lacks the laser precision those novels have of penetration into the souls of a variety of characters. Tolstoy is God in those novels, within and without all of the characters. In Resurrection, he has become enamored of his role as prophet and, therefore, feels he has the license and duty to present his, Tolstoy's, philosophy as the obvious rectification of the characters' moral and societal dilemmas. On the positive side, however, Resurrection, like its great predecessors, has a prose style that flows like a mountain stream. This quality remains apparent throughout various translations, like a composer's unerring gift for melody. The novel is worth reading if one has already read and admired War and Peace and Anna Karenina and some of the stories. The non-Tolstoy fan would probably wonder why this windbag of an author is being accorded the status of a titan. Henry James described War and Peace as a 'loose, baggy monster' and so it is according to his very precise criteria for crafted fiction. He would probably see Resurrection as a somewhat smaller, less baggy, less monstrous creature. The Tolstoyan stream flows where it will, however, disregarding the dictates of Henry James or any other literary theoretician. There is brilliance and beauty and one appreciates it most when one simply enjoys the journey.

This was a book that moved me quite a bit and was a very timely read in terms of things that I have been considering lately in my own life. As a result, I may like it better than it actually deserves. Or I may not. I thought that it was brilliant, honestly. But I see that many find it wanting next to the more thickly plotted Anna Karenina or War and Peace.Resurrection is a layered look at the concepts of atonement, amends, and forgiveness. The story is fairly simple in its lines. Prince Nekhlyudov is a weak but well-meaning nobleman who has lost his early ideals in the excitement and practicality of his every day life. As the book opens, he is serving his jury duty when he realizes with horror that one of the women on trial for robbery and murder was a serving girl (Maslova) who he had once seduced and abandoned. It is clear from the chance meeting that after he was done with her, she fell into a life of prostitution and poverty. In response to her situation and in his great dismay, Nekhlyudov quickly compounds his one great mistake with a second. In sorrow and regret, he decides that he will dedicate his life to making amends to Maslova. What Prince Nekhlyudov discovers is that atonement is nothing so simple as mending the personal situation. His self-examination leads him to criticize the system that left him with the ability to so simply ruin a woman's life. Class, religion, money, land, power, gender, politics, enfranchisement, punishment, rehabilitation, security, rights-- he cannot adequately treat with her without questioning every aspect of his person and society.I talked about this book in someone else's blog before I read had read enough of it to really comment. At that point, I thought that the book was going to be about the impossibility of amends. Maslova is quite scornful of Nekhlyudov initially. She accuses him of using her for her body in his youth and for his salvation in his middle age. She asserts that what he had done cannot be undone, and she is inevitably correct. If I had read further, I would have realized that Tolstoy's point does not end with the impossibility of amends. Atonement may well be impossible, but it is also-- this text argues-- essential. Nekhlyodov realizes that she is right, he cannot undo his damage, but he doggedly tries and follows the path where it may go-- even as it leads him away from everything that he has ever understood. At the end of the book, he has not (of course) managed to return Maslova to any kind of pristine state. But he has found a thread of meaning that allows his own resurrection. Moreover, he submits himself to her to allow her to choose her own destiny (within the available choices). The book never flinches from the complication of its characters. Prince Nekhlyudov is not perfect. His path is not smooth. Maslova is not a saint. They both have and retain their flaws. I also find that while the book is deeply concerned with issues of ethics and morality, it doesn't preach. Even the ending which features a meditation on the Christian commandments feels more like the natural conclusion of his personal journey than anything forced.Very highly recommended. A great note for me on which to end the 2008 reading year.

Take It as a Compliment

Review

Take It As A Compliment is a remarkable and moving collection of beautifully illustrated stories portraying the painful and lasting impact of everyday sexual abuse. Maria Stoian reveals herself to be a deft and inventive comic artist. Her colours are beautiful but also poignant, as she draws the lingering shadow of an unwanted touch. Take It As A Compliment is a very welcome and important contribution to the world of comics. Author: Sarah Lightman, artist, co-founder of Laydeez do Comics, and editor of the multi-award winning 'Graphic Details: Jewish Women's Confessional Comics in Essays and Interviews'To put it plainly, it is a voice for the voiceless and one of the most important works in comics this year. ...I can't say it enough just how powerful this comic is. Would it work in another medium? Probably, but there's just something about it as a comic book that really gets the story out there in an impactful way. This may not be your typical comic book purchase, but it's definitely one that everyone, even non-comic readers, should check out. Score: 5/5 Author: Comic BastardsThese twenty true stories of sexual harassment, abuse, and assault illustrated in comics form by Stoian are haunting, infuriating, and, while sadly all-too-familiar, powerful testaments of survival. In her graphic novel debut, illustrator Stoian is an art chameleon, adapting her style and use of color to each story. In the tale of a young girl groped on the subway, passengers are in plain black-and-white, while the hands reaching for her are rendered in nauseous greens and oranges. Stark black lines give way to sketchy pencils in a story of betrayal, and garish blocks of color depict a wordless story where the potential for danger looms as frighteningly as in any horror movie. Stories from women and men, submitted anonymously online or told to Stoian in interviews, reveal the many ways predators-strangers, friends, and intimate partners alike-take advantage of others' vulnerabilities. Included at the end is a guide to how to support survivors, get help as a survivor, and spot and intervene in instances of harassment or abuse. Eye-opening and lyrical. Author: Publishers WeeklyI would wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone. I also think it could be quite educational, as it brings to life several situations that some are thought to overreact about, but that really is a form of harassment or abuse. It also informs you that you're not alone. Author: The Book Castle blogWow.I had an idea what this graphic novel would be about based on the title, which is what caught my attention to begin with, but I was not prepared for how much this would take my breath away. It was eye opening to see all the different experiences told so openly and factually. Author: Just a Lil' Lost blogTake it as a Compliment is the furthest thing from a light read as it's possible to be, but its controversial content, while harrowing, is never off-putting. With composition as beautiful as the stories are ugly, the book challenges the reader to support social change through recognition and acceptance of what constitutes sexual harassment and abuse. The collection is an important step in reducing the amount of stories there are to tell. Author: Bad Cantina blogThis work is exactly the right sort of material to bring the discussion regarding sexual consent and respect for others, in all its facets, into the light of the mainstream, where it needs to be, for people to be educated about their actions in this sphere and the consequences they will have on others. But above and beyond that worthy fact, it is also a gripping collection of biographical comics brilliantly illustrated which I found fascinating to read. Author: Mental Health TodayUnfortunately, it's probably happened to all of us...Stoian's book clearly demonstrates exactly what law enforcement agencies the world over are now learning - that this kind of behaviour does not exist in isolation, but in dialogue with other types of abuse...reading about sexual harassment and assault is not meant to be a cushy, comfortable experience. Stoian's bold, honest illusions of each separate testimony are uncomfortable individually, but put together and read in one go they are profoundly unsettling. To my mind, this is the greatest success of this book - it is like being hit over the head repeatedly with stories of violence, harassment and stalking that are happening every day to all kinds of people and forced to take notice. Author: Harriet Earle Source: Comics ForumWhat is present in every story is the lingering shame, loneliness and helplessness of its subject. Some of them are able to stand up for themselves, others aren't sure that their discomfort is valid, but all are given respect by Stoian in her attempt to raise awareness of aggressive behaviour that is often considered a societal norm (...) while her creative and varied illustrations are essential additions to the tone and power of the compilation, it is language that is Stoian's most significant achievement in this project. By having each story told by the person who survived it, she has conceived a method to talk about the effects of abuse, giving a voice to individuals that may have never had the opportunity to share their experience before (...) This was so hard to read. But so, so important. From the description:Bringing together the voices of males and females of all ages, the stories in this collective graphic memoir reflect real life experiences of sexual abuse, violence and harassment. This is the kind of thing that we need to help people understand how truly prevalent abuse is.It's ugly, and it's gross, so we like to turn a blind eye.But we can't.The problem is, those who perpetrate this kind of evil (yes, I said evil) are insidious (yes, I said insidious) and know how to do these things and maintain plausible deniability. They know what to do and how to do it so that they can cover their tracks. So they can make it look completely innocent. And the thing is, we believe them over the people who are living with the shame of experiencing it.And people who have the responsibility of doing something about it ignore it. I guess we all have the responsibility to do something.I can't imagine the impact that has on someone's life. I guess you can't unless you've been through it.If you can read these stories and not hurt for these people, you truly have no heart. The book ends in some short descriptions of what you can do if you talk to someone who has experienced abuse, if you see it happening, or if you're a survivor.Read this. If only to get an inkling of what somebody else might have gone through.Received a copy from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

'Take It As A Compliment' by Maria Stoian is not a very fun book to read. These types of stories brought to light might actually help someone who is going through something similar. The twenty illustrated stories in this book don't include names. The people telling them are both men and women. They tell stories of how they were harassed and humiliated. By strangers, by family members, by loved ones, while travelling, and by trusted friends. Besides the shame the victim feels, there is also the shame heaped on them by their perpetrators. No one should have stories like this to tell. Often times, the shame of the incident keeps the victim silent. They've done nothing wrong, but they feel embarassed or responsible. Telling these stories brings them to light in order to hopefully shed light and stop this sort of behaviour. There are some simple guidelines in the back telling people to stop this sort of thing if they see it, I would've liked to see an appendix of resources for victims or something a bit more thoughtful. This was still a powerful and very hard to read graphic novel.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Jessica Kingsley Publisher, Singing Dragon, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Maria Stoian's Take It As a Compliment is, potentially, a very important book. Hardly a week goes by that we don't hear about some harassment or rape case, often on a college campus. Whether people are reporting it and talking about it more, or if society has become more flagrant and open about impropriety I don't know. Stoian has gathered stories from readers of her blog about their experiences as victims of assault or harassment and illustrated them in this book.I hope readers of Stoian's book will take these stories as she intends them to be taken, as a warning of what might happen, an encouragement not to let these things happen to you, and as a comfort to victims of sexual abuse or harassment that they are not alone. She ends with an admonition to listen to and support survivors of abuse and harassment, to watch for signs of it happening or potentially happening, and to intervene to protect others before they become victims. I can get behind that message, for sure!(This is a severely truncated version of my original review. It was rejected by Amazon; I'm not sure why. So I took most of it out, that in what I left I didn't include the s word. Maybe Amazon will accept it now. If you're curious, my full review is at my blog,[...] Not that it's necessarily that great, but I wrote it and if you want to read it you can!)

***Trigger warning: the stories told in this book deal with sexual harassment, assault, rape, etcThis book is amazing, and it should be read by anyone who will not be triggered by such a topic. I appreciate that the stories were told not just by women who have experienced rape or harassment; there were at least two stories shared by men. Most of the stories make my heart ache. The last few pages of this book include a guide of “what to do” to support the people in your life who may have been raped or harassed.

THIS BOOK IS SO IMPORTANT! Every story is a few pages and tells the story of a person's assault, from groping to domestic violence to rape. Almost every woman, queer, and genderqueer person will immediately connect with at least a few of these experiences, unfortunately. At the end of the collection the author gives the reader directions on how to help those close who have been affected by abuse. With simple and important advice, the overwhelming emotions felt after reading the stories are given answers and direction with a "how to help" section. Every person needs to read this. Read it. Share it. Discuss it.
