From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up-Yeats lived a rich, intellectual life and was very much involved in the events of his time. Born in Dublin, the son of a gifted professional family, he trained as a lawyer and also gained fame as a painter, a theatrical manager, and political figure. This collection reveals the poet's love for the landscapes and people of Ireland, especially of County Sligo. Strong themes of Celtic mysticism and the occult appear in several selections. Each poem is prefaced by a few lines that set the scene and is followed by an explanation of difficult words. Beautiful paintings, many full page, show landscapes, people, and animals referred to in the selections. An impressive introduction to this Nobel Prize winner.Libby K. From Booklist

Reviewed with books on Coleridge and Wordsworth in the Poetry for Young People series.Gr. 6-10. The editors of these handsome collections in the Poetry for Young People series have chosen well, bringing together about 20 of each great poet's most accessible, compelling poems, with selections that range from Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" to Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" and Yeats' stark, dramatic "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death." The full-color paintings on each page are beautiful. Each volume begins with a helpful general biography and a critical introduction to the poet's work. On the page with each poem, brief editorial notes provide useful context and guidance (if only the notes were at the back of the book, so that the reader could first enjoy a poem free of commentary). In fact, the book design is a problem, especially in the Yeats book. Harrington's impressionistic art is lush and beautiful, evoking the Irish landscapes, fantasy worlds, and stormy emotions of the verse; but the large pictures leave no space for readers to imagine what the words suggest, and much of the type is hard to read because it's printed right on the dark, full-page paintings. In the Coleridge and Wordsworth collections there is a lot more white space, and the illustrations evoke each poet's world without totally overwhelming the verbal images. None of this classic poetry is easy reading, and all three books will work best for reading aloud and group discussion. Hazel RochmanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

We really enjoyed this book during our weekly poetry tea time! :-) It gave us interesting info on the poet and a good sampling of his work. It's definitely intended for older children. The biography pages read a bit like a textbook and it didn't really hold the attention of my little ones.

Love the story and the poetry and the illustrations. Great way to intro a poet.

Under bare Ben Bulben's head In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid. An ancestor was rector there Long years ago, a church stands near, By the road an ancient cross. No marble, no conventional phrase; On limestone quarried near the spot By his command these words are cut:Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by!

Beautiful illustrations!

Oasis: Conversion Stories of Hollywood Legends, by Mary Claire Kendall

Review

“Inside stories about Stars that the studios never shared. I could not put it down and have gained a new appreciation for them” — Ron Masak, actor/writer    “In that seductive realm of mirage and illusion Mary Claire Kendall has uncovered authentic wellsprings of faith and divine illumination that transform our understanding of these legends of the silver screen. Her aptly titled book will indeed refresh the soul and enrich our view of Hollywood in its heyday. It is a treasure.” — Charles Scribner III, author of The Shadow of God: A Journey Through Memory, Art, and Faith    “Yes, even Hollywood legends can be saved and Mary Claire Kendall proves it in her wonderful, revealing book, Oasis—telling the stories of Hollywood actors and actresses who found peace of mind and soul in their conversion to the Catholic Church; or, in the case of one legendary director, famous for his cameos, his return to the Church. This book is not only spellbinding but also shows that all occupations, even in Hollywood, can put people on the way to salvation.”  — Fr. C. John McCloskey, Church historian and research fellow at the Faith and Reason Institute in Washington D.C.     “Oasis soars. It’s a riveting narrative about stars I grew up with and, in the case of legends Gary Cooper and John Wayne, identified with for their portrayal of American heroism in films like Sergeant York and Flying Leathernecks.  Learning of their own humanity and heroism makes me appreciate them so much more. Thank you, Mary Claire!“ — Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney (USAF-Ret.)    “Mary Claire Kendall's book is wonderful—a delight to read and sure to have powerful impact on readers. I'm always encouraged by stories of how Christ works in people's lives.  And to learn of the experiences of Hollywood stars—all the better.” — Fred Barnes, executive editor, Weekly Standard   “Celebrate with Mary Claire as she vividly brings to life stars of film and stage with such stories—helping us see them in a whole new and, until now, largely unknown way.  Guaranteed: You won’t be able to stop reading Oasis.” — Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely (USA-Ret.) "All the world's a stage" may seem cynical.  The fact is, though, that all people are actors in the splendid drama of salvation, and God offers them graces to play their parts well.  On the big screen,  there eventually appear the words "The End."  For those who let the Lord direct them, that "End" is not merely a finale, but the beginning of an eternal joy for which earthly existence is a brief rehearsal.  The lives described in Mary Claire Kendall's inspiring book were transformed by the realization that "life is changed, not ended."  — Fr. George William Rutler, S.T.D.

Want a good vacation book for summer reading? That would be Mary Claire Kendall’s “Oasis: Conversion Stories of Hollywood Legends.” Kendall uses interviews with 12 stars; conversations with their close friends; their own writing, and that of other authors, and gathers fascinating tidbits from behind the scenery. The dozen Hollywood legends within its 224 pages are Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward, Bob Hope, Jane Wyman, John Wayne, Patricia Neal, Alfred Hitchcock, Ann Sothern, Lana Turner, Betty Hutton, Ann Miller, and Mary Astor.Kendall takes readers on their journey that leads to conversion. In some cases it was through a good priest. For others, it’s the perseverance and prayers of the Catholic spouse (despite the other’s infidelities or alcoholism), that made the difference. Dolores Hope went to Mass every day and prayed Bob would become a Catholic. At the age of 93 the king of comic timing was converted.Gary Cooper’s Catholic wife knew he was a good man with feet of clay. She kept the family together for years and their parish priest became a great friend of “Coop.”According to the Kendall, while friends said John Wayne was a closet Catholic all his life, he was literally on his death bed when he was baptized, and a priest heard his confession.Betty Hutton went from being Hollywood’s “Blonde Bombshell” in the 1940s to losing a fortune, four husbands, and a breakdown at age 50. Helped by Father Peter Maguire, she worked several years as his rectory cook and housekeeper, living in the attic. She recovered, became a devout Catholic, and returned to Broadway. With encouragement from Maguire she even graduated cum laude from Salve Regina University with a master’s degree in Liberal Studies. These are spiritual love stories Hollywood seldom tells. You won’t want to put it down.

“Hollywood” is particularly unique in the world – the Florence of the film arts, the story-telling capital, a place where imagination flows and is prized, and the birthplace of celebrity for celebrity’s sake. Hollywood is not just a place but also a state of mind and source of power.Hollywood was built on seduction and it has raised seduction to the level of art providing it with an indirect and subtle form of immense power. “Hollywood” is the master seducer – manipulating, misleading, and giving us pleasure all at once. It can, with this unique power, enslave and lead people to a crisis of soul. Those in the business of making movies, the seducers, are not immune from being seduced themselves. It is one of history’s greatest weapons and provides the ultimate power trip…and some of the best conversion stories. In “Oasis,” author Mary Claire Kendall focuses on the seductions of Hollywood and conversion stories of twelve of the most recognizable stars from Hollywood’s Golden Era. Hollywood has just the right siren calls to lead stars astray. These “stars, so talented in portraying human frailty, are, themselves often too human,” they succumbed because they lacked a clear moral compass or lacked the strength to follow it. Without either, they were seduced by fame and celebrity which led each to personal destruction.“Oasis’s” conversion stories include Bob Hope, Ann Southern, Alfred Hitchcock, Gary Cooper, Lana Turner, John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Jane Wyman, and Patricia O’Neal. The book is well sourced. It provides a careful study of what was going on in each of the subject’s lives when a religious conversion happened. These lives followed somewhat similar patterns and rhythms with God always just below the surface. stays in a sanitarium.Adulation, affairs, abortions, divorce, alcoholism… were the symptoms of Hollywood’s seduction; guilt, depression, overdoses, and sanitariums were the aftereffects; and the search for forgiveness and healing were the catalysts for conversion. Recovery was “more a matter of the soul.” Oasis tells the story of these dramatic falls and the dramatic rescues that led to conversion.Conversions to the Catholic faith were a result of interactions with Catholics - coming from a Catholic home, marrying a Catholic, befriending a Catholic or Catholic priest, or just being surprised by God. Patricia O’Neal was influenced by Mother Dolores Hart after retreating to the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Connecticut; Gary Cooper had a habit of carrying a small wooden crucifix is in his pocket (as did Ernest Hemingway); Mary Astor prayed the rosary before her conversion. All found Christ’s pure love and healing forgiveness in the Catholic faith. The Golden Era which laid claim to these stars appears benign to the seductions of today’s Hollywood. Fast forward 50 years and the nightmare lives on – Lindsay Lohan, Robert Downey Jr, Charlie Sheen Philip Seymour Hoffman, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, John Belushi, and many more.“Oasis” shows the power and force of Hollywood’s seduction. In the personal stories of the stars, Kendall shows change is possible and that faith is a powerful force in that change. In spite of all the glamour, these people were just ordinary human beings with the same everyday concerns and desires we all have. And as they, we, too, are easy prey to the same pitfalls and need the same help from God to protect our souls.Kendall is a columnist on Hollywood and has been a contributor to Forbes, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, New York Daily News, New York Post, the Washington Times, Our Sunday Visitor, and Catholic New World. Mother Dolores Hart who knew many of these stars personally and was a great gift to Patricia O’Neal wrote Foreward.

Yes, even Hollywood legends can be saved and Mary Claire Kendall proves it in her wonderful, revealing book, Oasis—telling the stories of Hollywood actors and actresses who found peace of mind and soul in their conversion to the Catholic Church; or, in the case of one legendary director, famous for his cameos, his return to the Church. This book is not only spellbinding but also shows that all occupations, even in Hollywood, can put people on the way to salvation. I congratulate the author and look forward to more of her writings on Hollywood and the entertainment world.Fr. C. Wonderful book. It is great to get behind the headlines and learn about the real lives of some very famous celebrities. You see how very human they were, how many mistakes they made and how often, and how infidelity was a big problem for many of the men, such as Bob Hope and Gary Cooper. But is it also inspiring to see them come to grips with the problems and challenges of their lives. Particularly as they aged, so many of them had a deep sense of needing to make things right. Many of them joined the Catholic Church and it seems to have offered them the solace and peace that they needed. These are fascinating stories. Of course those lives are only partially covered; after all, each of these celebrities would merit their own full-length biography. But during Lent especially, their stories offer food for thought. I am grateful for this book. It is inspiring and fun to read. What more could you ask?
