I have gotten so, so, so much more out of the immigration law course I am taking right now than I otherwise would--due to having bought this small, laminated, helpfully color-coded fold-out chart. It gave me the big picture of the five federal administrative agencies involved with immigration law, key pieces of immigration policy (such as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952--a.k.a. the INA) and other information on the generalities of immigration law that our professor should have covered but sees no reason for the need to. Before attending my first immigration law class, I slowly read through every portion of info on this chart, writing reading notes on what I learned in my spiral. Then, when I attended the first class, I was able to anticipate some of what the professor would say. He went fast, but due to my having laid a groundwork in my brain before class, I was able to keep up and didn't feel the material was coming at me a million miles an hour. Through using this chart, I had pre-familiarized myself with the lay of the land and key vocab terms. This chart was ***well*** worth easily five times what I paid for it. It was a lifesaver!!!

As an undergraduate working for a local immigration lawyer, the pamphlet does its job on covering the basics of immigration law. Some of the protocols, forms, and policies have changed since the pamphlet was published (2011), so be weary of facts that don't seem to fit with modern immigration law. Other than that, great beginner's learner tool.

I like the way this was organized and written. It makes it easy to read and remember. Although substantively, it does not provide every reference, this outline nonetheless provides a road map to an extensive research.

I've been Alexandra's student for almost a decade, so I knew this book would be a trusted resource from the start! What I didn't expect was how awesome a birthday gift it makes for so many of my friends! Just celebrated a 60th with someone who opened it and said, "Oh, this is exactly what I need in my life right now," but also got very positive feedback from a friend who is still in her mid-forties and a certified yoga instructor!I particularly love the section where Sage and Alexandra offer suggestions for different scenarios in our lives; i.e., facing a stressful day, ending a long day, etc. I do a lot of driving to see parents who are 13 hours away, and Lifelong Yoga is THE go-to tool to pull out at the end of those drives.Thanks to both authors for their own collaboration (hope it's lifelong!) and for sharing their collective wisdom with all of us!

I see myself referencing this book as my body and mind continue to change over the years. It’s a quick yet extensive reminder of how to strengthen and calm the mind and body.

This is a wonderful combination of good commensense yoga info for middle-age and older and a fantastic photo-accompanied explanation of many poses. Really cool how they've categorized suggested poses for different times or events: "at the end of an emotional day," "before a workout," etc. Easy to read and follow!

A sensible guide for yoga to improve strength and flexibility in your body without intimidating poses or esoteric systems. The perspective on maintaining health and wellness is refreshing and shows that yoga has an equal place in lifetime fitness as any other fitness activity. A+!

I have almost all of Sage's books and this one did not disappoint either!

Excellent book for all levels with short sequences recommended for useful day to day activities. Language and pictures are easy to follow and informative. It seems like a great gift for any aging athlete or anyone who gently wants to improve their quality of life by adding more movement and stretching into their routine. I highly recommend.

Alia Malek intertwines several families living in a small neighborhood in Syria. She starts off with her own family starting several generations before her until we meet her present-day family as well as the neighbors that inhabited the neighborhood for generations. Her book is a must read for anyone who is interested not just in the Syrian conflict but what life was like long before the civil war started. I finished this book in less than 48 hours if that says anything about how enticing it was for me.

There's so much more to Syria than its conflicts: I think this book is required reading for anyone who wants to understand that. Period.Malek's book begins by narrating the country's birth, first through the story of her larger-than-life great-grandfather and mother. (I foresee a movie adaptation, beginning with Marta building ovens to feed the poor). We get to know her grandmother's Damascus apartment block, where Malek herself lived in 2012. In the opening chapters, history I'd thought I knew felt reframed, and coloured by these characters. She makes abstract-seeming personas tangible, even the founder of Baath and rival Islamic and secular factions becoming personalities. The book's pace quickens with Malek's first visit to Syria in 1992, and reels you into its novelistic-feeling narrative. I'd meant to read it slowly, but could barely put it down.If you're as suspicious of memoirs as I am, rest assured that Malek's book is one of the the exceptions (it reminded me of Isabel Allende's PAULA, Karol Nielsen's BLACK ELEPHANTS, or Dexter Filkins' THE FOREVER WAR). Malek keeps the focus tight; she leaves out much of her life when not in Syria. We only learn about Salma's granddaughter, and we grow to love her cousins and her home. The vivid descriptions made me miss the Syria I will now never know, from multi-religious Damascus to "Aleppo's great restaurants" (a phrase I never thought I'd read). Losses that preceded her story are just as vivid: the loss of Damascus' once-thriving Jewish Quarter, brought me to tears.This book doesn't just belong on your shelf. It belongs in your heart.

From cover to cover, THTWOC is an absolutely fantastic read. It's a highly engaging tale that beautifully weaves together a family history with the history of modern Syria. The story humanizes Syrians in a manner that few other works of art have managed to do in recent memory. This book conveniently arrives at a time when Syrians have been otherized in the media and political arenas, resulting in unwarranted anger and discrimination as they flee their war-torn homeland. THTWOC is a must read to understand the conflict's roots and origins as well as how ordinary people have endured the uprising and war during all these years. Job well done, Alia.

It is beautiful, it is soulful, and although it’s Alia’s, it’s ours as well.

You are in the moment with Malek and can smell the bitter orange when she scratches one of the leaves of her grandmother's tree. You're there looking out from a balcony in Damascus and seeing a woman across from you hanging laundry - you want to reach out to her much like the characters do but can't. This book is visual, poetic, & personal. But also educational, well researched, & imperative to our history. To understand the Syrian conflict, we need to listen to the Syrian people. It's important to note that Alia Malek wrote this book while Syria is (still) at war. We're given a chance to open our eyes and understand Syria from the beginning and into the present day, beyond the headlines. The importance of reading it at this moment is beyond words. I attempted to slow down in order to savor the last chapters, but they inevitably ended and I was left with a sense of loss & homesickness. I miss the book and I will think of Salma for the rest of my life.
