I have had this book a number of years and find it to be a great practical guide for a first time cat owner. It has beautiful clear photographs and discusses grooming, feeding, scratching posts, carriers, picking up your cat, nutritional requirements by age, the life cycle of a cat, parasites, cat behavior, and diseases. I like that it doesn't devote a huge section to the different breeds of purebred cats, but stays on topic for how to care for your cat. I like how photographs illustrate cat body language and facial expressions. I like that it is a reasonably short over-view that you can quickly read and learn the key information without being overwhelmed by too much information.The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that the book is due for a revised edition. While none of the info is wrong, I think some newer material could be added: the litter types could be expanded to include litters made of corn, wheat, or recycled paper. Mention of hyperthyroidism should be added to the section on caring for an elderly cat. This section could also include mention of the use of canned pumpkin for home treatment of mild constipation. Photographs of flea dirt and the larger female fleas would be nice additions to the skin parasite section. Under the section of problems in cat behavior, the litter box mishaps section could be expanded greatly, since litter box mishaps are a leading cause of owners relinquishing their animals to a shelter. The book could include how to clean up cat urine and hairballs. The feeding section could mention how to read an ingredient label so that meat is the first ingredient and grain fillers are only a small portion of the food.Overall though, this is a nice book and a great, inexpensive, practical gift.

We borrowed several books from the library as we were considering adding a feline companion to our family. This one was a hit with the kids -- DK so lots of pictures, one subject on each double-page, and some good information, too. They love the pictures of the cat getting a bath -- not a happy face :)

The other day my cat wouldn't drink water. Though I may have missed it, I couldn't find anything about dehydration in this book. Pretty common problem....book may not be as complete as it claims. Still, lots of good information. And ADORABLE pictures. They made it worth the money. Would buy again.

Whereas many “access to justice” efforts in the past three decades have focused on identifying means of providing more lawyers to more people, the authors persuasively argue that “lawyering up” has not been an effective strategy. Instead, they propose simplifying processes that may not require lawyers, such as having special dockets for unrepresented parties in low value claims, having judges become more active in eliciting important facts from parties, ensuring that simple forms are available, and piloting the use of technology to help people resolve typical disputes through online dispute resolution, to name just a few. The suggestions for reforming America’s archaic and inexplicably expensive system of legal education are particularly insightful.Having served on innumerable “access” committees over three decades where addressing the root of the problem is largely avoided, this candid assessment of legal representation, together with its array of potential solutions, is both timely and welcomed.

Between the years 1985 and 2011, roughly one in three law school graduates in the United States could not find work as a lawyer, and there are many as 600,000 JD holders who are not working as a lawyer. Roughly a quarter of the lawyers are not in private practice. In the 1700s and in the 1800s, a citizen could represent himself. Even then many judges were not lawyers.

Simplification is also more democratic - empowering citizenry rather than professionals.Barton then provides examples of poor defense provided those accused (underfunding = underlying cause, along with a failure to weed out those failing their clients), and tells us that legal aid funding has been in steady decline since the 1990s - down 63% from its 1980s high pointAppointed criminal defense lawyers are often wildly overburdened, lack support (eg. private investigator), and plead their clients guilty as quickly as possible. The situation in our civil courts may be worse. Mothers seeking child support, tenants fighting eviction, laid-off workers claiming unemployment or disability benefits usually cannot afford lawyers. A 2010 ABA survey of state court judges, 94% stated that unrepresented parties fail to present necessary evidence, 89% said they suffer from procedural errors 85% said they failed to effectively examine witnesses, and 81% said they are unable to object to improper evidence offered by an opponent. (Yes, they give you the walking plan for free, but when you graduate to running Runner's World tries to reach into your pocket again after they already got your money when you bought the book."I believe that back in the 1970s when I first started running, this was what we called a "rip-off".Everything you need should be in the book.The book should have everything you need in it, and the website should be free.

This book was marketed on the basis of providing beginner advice but only provides one level of running plan, then directs you to a website to buy the other plans. The plans are the most important part. Scam. Don't bother with runners world, find great free advice by searching the internet a bit.

I should have paid more attention to the reviews as I usually do; not sure how this slipped by me. I think I just trusted the Runners World brand - I guess it's a good reminder never to assume! While I think there is some good motivating beginner running information in here, the fact that they refer you to their site to pay $9.99 for each of the actual plans is ridiculous. They refer you back to that site so much that it begins to feel like one big commercial. This book is not cheap and it's purpose (I thought) is to guide new runners on how to start. Without the plans, that's impossible (there is however a walking plan... which increases the frustration because i'm quite sure i didn't buy the big book of walking for beginners). I will buy another running book or use other free plans simply because of my disappointment that Runners World would actually think this is a good approach.

I bought this book for my wife who wanted to a program to add distance to her running program. Everything you want to use this book for asks for more money. Really this is like one of those free to use apps for your phone, it tells you some basic information but anything you would want to use this book for ends up asking for more.I would save your money and buy something else. Seriously disappointing.

I'm a beginning runner so there is a lot in this book that is really helping me improve. They have updated their diet section to include information that healthy fats are good for you, but in other parts of the book, they are really harping on eating low fat, so I found that a little inconsistent (not to mention, the low fat advice goes against current nutritional science).One minor peeve is that they have plans for several training programs, but you only get samples in the book. Yes, it's a book, but it's a book with ads. Most of the running plans suggested directed the reader to visit the website for a more detailed plan that the reader would have to pay for.I enjoyed reading the stories of other people who were able to change their body and reverse certain illnesses just by running alone. The snapshots are motivators, but I know running alone did not change the body. I have to mention this as I do not want other readers to be deceived.Overall, the book is an easy read. Offers some okay tips and worth taking a look at. I would not buy it though. Borrow it instead.

The first time I looked at the cover I thought it was not going to be a good book but when I saw the author Judy Blum I told my mom I would give it a try since I have read almost all of her books . When I was half why in the book I instantly fell in love with the book so when I had to do something I tried so hard to resist . But before you skip me I hust have to say this is the best book I have ever read so I think u sould try it u might like it like I did (BTW my fav character was Rachel ) I could go on and on and on and on about how great this book is but I really whant you to read this book and If u dont its your loss that u past up a great book so good to ur favorite spot and a blanket and read this book by:)

I first read this book in 1988 when I was 12, like the main character of the book; and read it most recently when I was 38, like the main character's mother, and more times than I could begin to count all the years in between.

Read this as a child, and now my daughter loves it as well. Defense stands the test of time! She loves all the Judy Blume books.

This guide is up to date and easy to digest. It gives all the information one needs on what to see and when museums etc are open. Also the background on the social history and even the politics of Chile is explained simply and with no bias. It is a good, comprehensive, visitors guide that will be invaluable to newcomers to Chile.

A large section of Chile (The BioBio) was left out of this book. This is the area I was most interested in visiting recently, and not a word was printed about the major cities of Concepcion, Chillan, and several others. I haven't checked to see what else was overlooked across the rest of the country. The sections provided contained useful, but sparse information about what there is to see and do. This book could certainly provide much better and more complete information.

Just back from today after using the book extensively. Information was excellent. Easy to read. Easy to rip apart so you don’t have to take the whole book when you go. Just take the parts where you will visit.

Leaving for Chile shortly and found the book well-organized and helpful. In fact, I like it better than one of the other well-known travel guides of Chile.

Has so much information in it, gives tips on where to stay and things to do, would recommend.

Love Fodor's guides. Recommendations for sightseeing, activities, hotels, restaurants are always spot-on. Like the insider perspective.
