About the Author

Zora Neale Hurston was a novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist. An author of four novels (Jonah’s Gourd Vine, 1934; Their Eyes Were Watching God, 1937; Moses, Man of the Mountain, 1939; and Seraph on the Suwanee, 1948); two books of folklore (Mules and Men, 1935, and Tell My Horse, 1938); an autobiography (Dust Tracks on a Road, 1942); and over fifty short stories, essays, and plays. She attended Howard University, Barnard College and Columbia University, and was a graduate of Barnard College in 1927. She was born on January 7, 1891, in Notasulga, Alabama, and grew up in Eatonville, Florida. She died in Fort Pierce, in 1960.  In 1973, Alice Walker had a headstone placed at her gravesite with this epitaph: “Zora Neale Hurston: A Genius of the South.”

Although most of those who recognize Zora Neal Hurston’s name think of her fiction, Hurston was also an anthropologist, a Student of Franz “papa” Boas, one of the last great public intellectuals in the 20th century. This wonderful, unique monograph provides a history of key events and impressions of daily life in Haiti in a beautiful, accessible manner. History, politics, and Voodoo are the main topics, and each is covered in a way that is both readable and informative. Hurston’s voice is uncommon as an anthropologist (there were not many black women anthropologists at the time), and her narrative weaves observation with interpretations smoothly and beautifully, so that it has about it the feel of a folktale, with scenes joyous, haunting, horrible, and at times, downright creepy.Hurston, who did not often (if ever) say why she was there, was truly a part of the daily lives of the people with whom she stayed, and she withheld information about why she was there because she knew that if she told the people, she would see a performance of people’s lives, rather than actual lives, staged dances rather than real dances. Hurston also brings us a superb example of participant observation, and she makes no pretense that she can somehow get data that is completely uninformed by her presence. Neither does she accept stated perceptions at face value, but rather, challenges them when she feels it is appropriate. Consequently, her grasp of what is going in around her is much stronger.One critique I do have is that Hurston makes sweeping, reductionist statements that betray her positionality (an educated black woman from the United States) in some aspects. I am not saying she wasn’t reflective, as there are many comments throughout the book that lead me to believe she was, but rather, that reflectiveness isn’t ever explicitly stated.For those who enjoy political intrigue, reading about the death of Leconte (chapter 9) might prove quite enjoyable. Leconte isn’t the only memorable character in the book, even if, historically speaking, he may be the best known. Or perhaps that nod goes to Vilbrun Sam. In any case, there is also the buffoon president, his Voodoo priestess daughter, and her husband the goat. Oh, and zombies. The layout of Hurston’s book sets the reader up for the world in which voodoo is at work at that period of time in history, in all places, at all levels of society, leading up to the title chapter, “Go Tell My Horse,” which refers to the “mounting” (or possession) of a person by a loa.Whether for enjoyment or assignment (although I do hope those aren’t mutually exclusive), Go Tell My Horse is an enjoyable, fascinating observation of Haiti in the first half of the 20th century, and I highly recommend you give it a read.

An amazing body of work. I am a Haitian American and I can tell you that the author has answered questions that my 81 year old father had been plagued with forever. Zora Neale Hurston really dived in deep and came out with results. A spectacular read!!!

This book has changed my life. As a speaker who presents talks on Zora Neale Hurston, I highly recommend this text. The remembrances about Zora's life in Haiti are remarkable and will certainly add to your research. When I found the text on Amazon, I bought the book right away. When I took the text to a conference, I was delighted to see how other Professors who were surprised to see the publication.

Really interesting research by writer Zora Neale Hurston into West Indian island cultures and their still-unexplained (perhaps inexplicable) mysticism and religions. She writes of her experiences and insights with a combination of warmth, humor, respect, and depth; some of the material is quite dark and morbid, as anyone who knows anything of Voodoo and zombies might imagine.

I have read several other books on Haiti. "Tell My Horse" exceeded my expectations. It is filled with Zora Neale Hurston's sharp observations about color, music and dance, social customs, politics, fears and superstitions, and that utterly fascinating religion, Voodoo. Her insights into Voodoo and her vivid descriptions of customs and ceremonies make you hear the sounds and feel the heat of those spiritual nights on the island.

I love that it was a first hand account but I felt it ended too soon and their was oddly not enough about voodoo in this book, although I understand that when you learn voodoo you are not supposed to reveal much of anything

I really expected to like this more than I did. Hurston is a great writer and I have at least a passing interest in voodoo, but much of this fell flat or simply too academic for my taste. I found myself much more interested in the historical aspects of Haiti than I did the somewhat bland takes on the voodoo rituals. It is still really good writing, but her fiction is much better.

Hands down, the best book I've read in a long time. Disclaimer; I live in Oklahoma where these terrible events took place. Even though I have some very close friends who have ranched outside of Pawhuska (focal town in the story) for generations, I had never even heard the stories of the Rein of Terror. I borrowed a copy from a coworker and as soon as I finished it, I ordered 2 more; one for myself and one as a gift to my grandfather.If you have any interest whatsoever in dark periods of American history or you're just looking for a good murder mystery (seriously, it is so shocking it reads like fiction), do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book. It's honestly a must read.

Author David Grann spent years doing research and uncovering new evidence in writing Killers of the Flower Moon. Since I was a fan of his from reading The Lost City of Z, I expected this latest book to be the sort of non-fiction I love: the kind that reads like the best fiction. I was not disappointed. What I did not expect was just how infuriated I would become by reading it.Having been a huge horse racing fan when I was a teenager, I knew about the wealth of the Osage Nation in the 1920s. One of the Osage owned a winner of the Kentucky Derby. But that knowledge was just cursory. I had no idea how rich the Osage really were, and I certainly didn't have a clue that the government didn't trust them with all that money. I should not have been so naive. It had to madden many whites that, although they'd shoved the Osage onto a piece of land they deemed unfit for themselves, oil would be discovered and the Osage would turn out to be the wealthiest people in the world. The one way they had of trying to horn in on this wealth was by declaring that the Osage were not fit to use their own money wisely. In many cases whites were put in charge of the families' money, and they gave their wards allowances (and themselves large fees for their business knowledge).Why on earth should I be so surprised that this greed would escalate to murder? It is the natural progression after all. To this day, the Osage have trust issues, and who can blame them? They tried to get dozens of murders investigated, but instead the killings were covered up. What Grann did in Killers of the Flower Moon was to dig deeper and deeper and expose just how huge the problem actually was. As I read, words like horrifying, unspeakable, and several others flashed through my mind. This is an uncomfortable read for anyone with a conscience; nevertheless, it is a fascinating and important one.(Review copy courtesy of NetGalley)

This is one of the best true crime historical accounts I've ever read. From start to finish it is compelling reading that didn't let me put the book down. A darkly fascinating subject well rendered.

This is one of the most heartbreaking and terrifying books I have ever read. I hope that it becomes a staple of reading lists for American history classes. It is an incredibly well told story of a staggering real world evil in an America only two or three generations removed from our own. You should read it. It won't take long - it is, though it feels crass to say so, a genuine page-turner. And I at least will likely wrestle with it for a long while. Man o man.

Since the 17th century, the Osage tribe claimed land from Missouri west to the Rockies. With the Louisiana Purchase, the tribe was forced to cede land to accommodate the flood of western expansion. In Chronicle One of Grann's book, the history of the tribe is laid out. By the 1870's, what remained of the Osage tribe settled in NE Oklahoma because their chief deemed the land too hilly for white settlers to want to file claims there. The tribe negotiated with the Department of the Interior that any reservation land used for oil drilling or mining, had to be leased from the tribe and that the full blooded Osage would share in any profits from these natural resources. Logs where kept of Osage tribe members and indeed, when oil gushed from leased reservation land, head rights were claimed. The Osage tribe were among the wealthiest people in the country. Starting in 1921, Osage tribal members began to die. Some were shot in the head while others suffered from a mysterious "wasting" disease. Many suspected murder and lived in fear of who might be next.Chronicle Two describes in detail the role of the Bureau of Investigation (the early FBI) to unravel the murders during what became known as "the Reign of Terror." The Bureau was formed under Teddy Roosevelt in 1909. By 1924, J. Edger Hoover became head of the Bureau. He wanted to highlight the expertise of the Bureau by solving the Osage murders. He hired a former Texas Ranger, Tom White, to lead the investigation. The reader discovers clues along with White as he methodically collects evidence and interrogates witnesses and suspects . This is the most exciting part of the book. Many, but not all of the culprits are brought to justice.How are the Osage doing now? This is the gist of Chronicle Three and it is, unfortunately, the weakest part of the story. Grann checks in with the descendants of some of the murdered Osage. Their sense of unease and lack of justice is palpable. The oil has dried up and the tribal population has diminished. Some press Grann to help them bring closure to the holes in their family histories. But the ancestors are in their graves along with the murderers and the paper trail is weak or inconclusive. As Grann runs out of answers, this reader ran out of interest. It is a compelling and important story up to this point. Now that wind turbines dot the prairie of the Osage reservation, their future seems as bleak as their past and the lack of justice seems as limited as their future. Despite Grann's extensive notes and lists of resources, the reader is left, like the Osage themselves, with more questions than answers.

His Designer Food: Mutant Harvest or Breadbasket of the World? won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2003. He doesn't think the sky will fall if a cloned baby is born. In opposing laws against cloning, he was asked to testify in 2001 before Congress and in 2002 before the California Senate. Textbook itself is in new condition, however I am less than satisfied with how it arrived. The textbook is hole punched, but with only 2 holes. Not to mention, the holes are uneven. I purchased a mini binder to put the textbook in and it does not fit; the holes are completely uneven. I then tried to fit the mini textbook into a regular binder, also did not fit. So now I am stuck with a loose leaf mini textbook that does not fit into anything. I would have rather hole punched it myself. Definitely not worth the price and can find a cheaper, better copy elsewhere.

came with 2 holes which seemed to be punched out randomly at the top half of the book- will not line up with any folder system.very disappointed

I was upset I looked at the reviews after ordering this and saw it has only 2 hole punches instead of 3. However, upon arrival, it fits just fine in a normal 1 in binder that I use for class. For the price point, you can’t complain. It will be great in class!

The organization of the text is unorganized and it’s written at a pretty low reading level, at least below a college level

Aaron J. Klein is Time magazine’s Military and Intelligence Affairs correspondent in the Jerusalem Bureau. He was the recipient of 2002 Henry Luce Award and has been a consultant for CNN. Klein was the military/security correspondent and analyst for Hadashot and Al-Hamishmar, two of Israel’s leading national newspapers. He is a contributor to Malam, the journal for former IDF Intelligence, Mossad and Inernal Security Agency officers. He teaches at Hebrew University and is a Captain in the IDF’s Intelligence.

As an Israeli citizen and a member of the IDF we know from what point of view Klien is presenting Munich and subsequent events. Yet, he still presents many of Israel’s adversaries as human and as dedicated to their cause as the Mossad. Klien provides sufficient detail while keeping the reader engrossed. He also, questions each individual assassination, but leaves plenty of room for the reader to come to his own conclusions. Clearly, many of the assassinations carried out by Mossad were on relatively easy targets. People who were chosen, not because of the gravity of their crimes, or potential danger, so much as they were not well hidden. It is clear that some of the targets Mossad took out may have potentially saved lives while others may have only served as revenge. It is difficult to prove with certainty.One thing that was clear, and surprising, was the fantastic ineptitude of the Germans. Everything was botched, from security that may have prevented the attack in the first place to the ambush of the Black September terrorists at the airfield that the West Germans should have been able to carry out successfully, since it was they, not the terrorists, were able to choose the time and place of the action. The level of cowardice of the Germans was also hard to believe. When given an excuse – a hijacked plane – to free the three terrorists they did capture, the West German government did not hesitate. In fact most Western European governments are guilty of utterly shameful behavior. Of the 204 Arab terrorists captured in Europe during the 70’s and 80’s only 3 remained in jail. All others were released. So I have little sympathy for Europeans and the fact that their countries were a battle ground between Mossad their Arab adversaries.

I have read many books on this subject, including Vengeance, the book on which Spielberg based his sappy, overly moralized movie "Munich," and One Day In September, on which an award-winning documentary was based. Of the three I rate Klein's book as the best. There are three reasons for this: 1) Klein's is the most recent, which allows him a broader historical perspective from which to judge Israel's campaign, its results, and its repercussions, 2) Klein was granted access to Israeli government documents which had not been previously available, and 3) he is not an apologist for either side, finding fault with both the Palestinian terrorists and, several times, with Israel's actions.It is not an exhaustive study on the topic (Vengeance & September are each longer), but it covers both major and minor events in the campaign pretty thoroughly, if succinctly. Klein was granted more interviews with current and former officials from the Mossad, Israel's secret intelligence service, than any author before him. That first hand knowledge, combined with a punchy writing style and his unprecedented access to relevant government documents, makes this a compelling and very educational read.

we all watched it ... we were all horrified by the Munich games massacre. we saw it all unfold and could see the flaws in the German/Bavarian governments' mishandling of the event. i must insert here however, that, the event did produce, a later event in Germany by spurring that government to establish an excellent hostage crisis response unit and other countries established similar units based on the German model. while many governments may have thought about establishing specialty response units that particular type of police response was at the very least in its infancy. no one had SWAT teams as such established, hostage responses were not standardized in any jurisdiction.this book does not dwell on the Munich event except to present the event succinctly but it does present both sides of the resulting conflict. if you read any book about this tragedy and how it radically changed police response to hostage situations, high profile or not, this is the one to read as you will learn the underlying tensions and reasons for the entire situation.while watching this tragedy unfold, we all knew that the outcome was not going to be the happy ending that a book of fiction would serve up, we knew this was too serious and too intense to end well and clearly saw the flaws in the response to the crisis. we remarked at the time ... why are the television news crews showing this in real time? don't they understand that while it was a huge news event, they were providing exactly the information needed by the perpetrators and it was easy to see that nothing the police were going to try was going to be kept secret from the men who committed this heinousness. so ... we now have trained hostage negotiators, and rapid highly trained police response teams specifically trained for these situations. how long we will have them given congressional constipation regarding all federal funding is one of the questions we can only hope is well thought out and well handled. this can and has happened elsewhere, even here in the USA, albeit not on such a grand stage, it is happening in other countries on a regular basis (ie, terroristic kidnappings in certain southern border towns). unfortunately, not all nations learned a lesson from this event and we can only hope that the US government insists on retaining these specialized police units as well as other rapid response teams specialized for other crimes.all in all, the book is quite balanced and reads much like a novel which should make it an easy if unpleasant read for some, but it is an important book for anyone interested in not only the world horror of such an event, but also in various nations' response within their own policing or military agencies.

I was always under the impression that Israel and the Mossad killed all the perpetrators of the Munich Olympics massacre- they didn't; I was suprised to read about how perps were picked for assasination and the levels of verification, oversight and study that went into eliminating every terririst on the list. I have more respect for Israel after reading this book as their assination efforts put a huge dent into terrorists and terrorism. This was an intresting and elightening read. For example, I never knew how bad the West German govertment and Bavarian officials blew the prisoner exchange and the fact that west Germany and Bavaria were so porrly prepared for terrorists and terrorism.

Whole Wheat Cornbread   Serves 6   4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) salted butter, plus more for the baking dish 2/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon whole wheat flour ½ cup organic fine cornmeal 1 tablespoon baking powder, sifted ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup fresh, canned, or thawed frozen corn kernels ½ cup heavy cream 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup 2 large eggs ½ cup sour cream   Preheat the oven to 350°F. With butter, generously grease an 8 x 8-inch baking dish or 9-inch cast-iron skillet.   In a large bowl, mix together ⅔ cup of the whole wheat flour, the cornmeal, baking powder, and salt.   In a small pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon whole wheat flour and whisk until the roux begins to smell nutty and has a nice light brown color, about 3 minutes. Add the corn and cream. Whisk until the mixture thickens; this should take only a couple of minutes. Mix in the honey and remove from the heat. Let cool slightly.   Add the creamed corn mixture, eggs, and sour cream to the bowl with the flour and stir the ingredients well to combine without overmixing.   Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.       Recipe Notes: You can also bake the bread in a loaf pan, but you’ll want to increase the baking time by 15 to 20 minutes.   For a little added sweetness, a homemade honey or maple butter is the perfect topping for this cornbread. A word to the wise: It’s a good idea to double this recipe, because you’ll surely want to consume one fresh out of the oven, leaving nothing to serve later with the chili.

What a wonderful cookbook to add to my collection! I have already read it cover to cover. Great writing by both Eivin and Eve- I could totally hear their distinct voices in what I was reading, and found myself chuckling often as I read. The pictures of the family are so charming- finding Findley right at the beginning completely set the tone for the book and it was so heartwarming to see. I love the tone of the homesteading advice- completely informative and "this is how we do it" without being preachy or proclaiming that their way is the only way. Eve suggests right at the beginning that one should feel free to play with the recipes for available ingredients, and then carries that throughout the book. I've already made the Blueberry Muffins and the Chicken and Barley Soup, and both are winners. This book will be used often- as a recipe book and as inspiration.

I have never even heard of this show or this couple, but have been looking for cookbooks with whole recipes with the idea of self sustaining in mind. Seeing the raving reviews, I purchased this book..and while the photography is breathtaking, the recipes are a bit eccentric. It looks to me as if most people who bought this book are fans of the show, and if that’s your thing then go for it. However, the regional Alaskan foraged recipes don’t do me, in Texas, any good..which is the reason behind my rating. If you love the show and could really care less about the recipes, then consider this a five star book. However, if you are looking for an actual COOKbook with simple, everyday recipes and not a “day in the life” book, look elsewhere.

I wish we could be homesteaders but being military and moving every otther year, sometimes every year, well it isn’t the cards right now, but it’s a retirement dream. We love their show and I saw some reviews about how if you didn’t like the show you wouldn’t like the cookbook. I sat false on that one. Eve writes this understanding that the average reader isn’t homesteading next door in Alaska. She takes the time in most of the recipes to put notes about substitutes if you can’t find a certain ingredient and explaining why certain ingredients are used whether it be their nutrition profile or what not. They do include wonderful little stories about their homesteading adventure which are a fun bonus, but the book itself just has some many delicious wholesome real food recipes. You don’t have to be a homesteader growing your own food - I want a garden so badly and at some duty stations we have been able to have small ones. Right now it isn’t realistic because we moved middle of the summer and leave early summer next year. But they encourage the reader to be a homesteader in whatever capacity you can or to just be more conscious of where your food is coming from and express a little of why they feel that’s important. Eve encouraged me to try my hand at capturing and starting my own sourdough! I can’t say my first try was faultless but my 4 year old and I made her sourdough waffles with our starter (that she helped with daily and was excited about) and she gobble them up!! My daughter has seen some of their show, she does everything with me. Kids are so much more observant that we realize sometimes. I didn’t realize how much she was becoming aware of my desire to know where our food was coming from until she asked me if I captured that chicken I was prepping for dinner one night 😂 This book is a great challenge to me to keep up with my quest to keep more real food in my house, do what I can in our current circumstances to grow what I can and purchase more food that I know where it came from and meat that is humanly raised, to include my children in as much of it as possible so that they understand the importance. Thank you Eve and Eivin for sharing a little of your homestead with us!

Finally! A healthy cookbook with real food that doesn't shy away from dairy or good fats. Bring on the bone broth and the roasted rolt vegetables. Eivin and Eve are my favorites on Alaska: The Last Frontier, but this would be a good cookbook for anyone who wants to dip their toes (and spoons) into homesteading or good, wholesome home cooking. And it's beautiful to display or flip through.

This cookbook rocks! My wife bought this book on preorder I believe and since has made around a dozen of the recipes out of it. Salmon burgers, honey sage venison sausage, eivins popcorn for dinner, and some amazingly easy and tasty pie crust. If you want a good cookbook with great, healthy recipes I would suggest this one.

I've read it front to back a dozen times since I got it and HOPE! they make another book or cookbook soon.I appreciate their use of fresh ingredients. I purchased this for my parents. They love the show and the couple. The book is more than just recipes; it also includes anecdote and stories from their unique lifestyle. Eve and Eivin are charming and they remind people to appreciate their resources and food. You do not need to have seen the show to appreciate this book.

I received the 2019 Essentials Support for Medical Necessity and sat down with it after supper. Looked through every chapter and found the little things that us coders need information for that takes hours of your time to find. I really appreciated the topics discussed and the information reviews on guidelines and such. This book will definitely be a go to resource in my auditing and documentation improvement assignments for the future. Professionally written for professional persons. The clarity in this resource book is spot on. This is not a book for beginners but for professionals with several years experience. There are some but not a lot of information that most professionals will already have branded to their memory, but it is the little things that this book gives that makes the difference. The ONLY thing that would be beneficial is an index, however, I respect AMA's point of view. This is not a beginner's book. We already know our anatomy and etiology of diseases/conditions so we would also know ICD-10-CM/PCS right? An added index would be a crutch. I believe this book was introduced to keep you on top of knowledge rather than search, grab and move on. I will probably use this book every time for auditing or answer questions.
