We bought this book to accompany the purchase of an SPT SS-301 Multi-Cooker Shabu Shabu and Grill. We always wanted to do shabu shabu at home, but have no knowledge on where to begin. Sure, we can find recipes and instructions online, but why bother with the trouble when you have all the basic information you need in a neat collection ready for you to reference when you need it? The book provide recipes for base broth (e.g. dashi, etc.), dipping sauce/condiment, meat based hot pot, seafood based hot pot, veggie hot pot and everything goes hot pot. It also goes into details on common ingredients, such as negi (welsh onion), what they are and flavor profile. Once you've found your favorite recipe and base broth, the combination is literally up to your imagination.

What a beautiful book! I've read this cover to cover and just loved it. I really enjoyed the introduction for each recipe and the color photographs. I've tried a few of the recipes and they're delicious! Some ingredients will probably be hard to find in regular grocery stores, but I love how the recipes are authentic. Hot pot cooking is pretty laid back, though, so you can substitute ingredients for the ones you can't find and it will still be great. Looking forward to trying them all.

I lived in Japan for three years, and shabu-shabu, or hot pot cooking, was terrific in the winter while living in a traditional house with no heat except a space heater and huddling under a kotasu (table with a heat bulb and quilt to cover your legs). This book has terrific, authentic recipes in an easy to follow format and the photography is gorgeous. It would be hard to pick this book up without wanting to rush off to an Asian market to get ingredients and start cooking. My boyfriend was raised on Campbell's soup, (no offense to Campbell's but let's face it, it isn't haute cuisine or fine dining) and got all ho-hum about soup until this book came into our house. The pictures got him excited, and the outcome was super. He's a convert. A great gift for others after you get a copy for yourself!

This book is as much about what Japanese Hot Pot is, as it is recipes on how to make it. The first 35 pages of the cookbook cover Hot Pot culture, ingredients, basic techniques and basic recipes. The remainder of the book divides recipes into categories based on whether vegetarian or by the type of meat is used as the main ingredient. I would have liked to see more information on substitutions. While the book does describe some substitutions, for others the authors just assume the reader has access to a Japanese or Asian market. That's simply not true for all of us.

The author showed excellent knowledge about the hot pot dish, and the varieties for each broth, vegetables and meats variation. It also has whole fish recipe too, can't wait to try that one. For my first try out, I chose the tofu hot pot dish, since I happened to have most of the ingredients, and I am pleased with the result. Wasn't sure at first whether boiled tofu would taste good, but it was delicious. And my family devoured it, including my picky eater kid. Will try other dishes soon. The book also has step by step pictures to help showed how the ingredients need to be arranged in the donabe. Very useful and artsy at the same time.

The great thing about hot pots is that most of them are super easy one pot meals. And they're quite comforting during the winter months (or all year if you live in San Francisco!).If you have access to an Asian supermarket, you can probably find most of what you need. Most of the ingredients for the soup bases are non-perishable or have a very long shelf life, so definitely consider stocking up on those. If you can't find something or live out in the sticks, many of the non-perishables are available online. Some of the fresh ingredients can often be substituted or omitted. Don't like tofu? No problem, skip it. Don't have napa cabbage? Then toss in some regular cabbage or broccoli instead. Etc.If you can't get the ingredients or don't want to commit to purchasing them, then you can use this book as a general guide. And definitely let google be your friend for helping with substitutions. For example, you can substitute dry sherry for sake (rice wine), and add some sugar to make a mirin substitute. If you don't want to make dashi stock from scratch, then get the instant powdered kind. Or maybe even consider using watered down fat free chicken broth in its place. I've owned this book for around a year and occasionally flip through it. Despite having easy access to just about every ingredient in the book, I don't think I've ever followed any of these recipes to the letter.The book is loaded with nice photos and is well written. It's an excellent source of inspiration for those cold winter (and summer) evenings.If you want to cook at the table, then I'd suggest getting a butane stove and some butane fuel canisters. They're very cheap, and unlike portable electric stoves, you can take them anywhere (like a picnic!).

Much as I love sushi and sashimi, I'm also pleased to be able to explore foodways of Japan (among other nations) that add to gustatory pleasure. The cookbook is amply illustrated with yummy photos. Great selection of essays with super photos. This was great background to several issues in the Galapagos and really helped set my expectations. I read this about a month before my galapagos island cruise; the issues and history covered so well by Tui De Roy allowed me to have some interesting discussions with the ships crew and naturalists as well as our host for our land accommodations pre-cruise. Our cruise ship, the Galaven, had this book in their library and I was able to recommend some relevant essays to fellow travelers who had particular interests. Highly recommend this to those who want to look behind the scenes or surface.

Purchased this after having been to the Galapagos this past summer. I look through it over and over and am reminded of how special the place is. I keep in on my coffee table and many people have commented on it. Great book!!

A good book for people thinking of going to the islands prior to their trip, just to get a taste and some education on what they'll find. Book arrived quickly and in brand new condition. Would definitely order from this seller again.

Got this book for my husband at Christmas. He's always wanted to build a wood boat and he wanted several books to gather information and opinions. This was one of two. My husband really liked the information and photos in this book. It arrived quickly and in good condition with some other items I had ordered. It was not wrapped or protected, but it made it. I will update with any further thoughts my husband might add

Great book! I have been planning (dreaming) of building a wooden boat for a number of years. Only space and time have held me up. Now that I have both, I can begin serious research of the various methods and materials and set those dreams in motion. I have a couple other well-acclaimed books on the topic of wooden boat building, but they are focused on details of design, engineering and frame structure which is good, but they was too detailed and seemed to pass over the topics I needed to understand planking and such. This book was perfect. The author had separate chapters on each planking method as well as a rather exhaustive explanation and illustrations on the crucial task of lofting and steaming the frames. I wish I had bought this book first. I could have started my dream sooner and with confidence. If you want a good, useful overview of wooden boat building, start with this book.

Appears to be a rehash of an early book by Mr. Rossel and not very in depth. Much better books out there, including his earlier and very good book "Building Small Boats.

Again another book I purchased for the IIMS wooden boat course. Well illustrated and covers the topic in detail and is easily readable. Good illustrations although color pictures would be a great benefit.

A ton of info crammed into one book. While it doesn't cover everything, it is a jump point to learning. It gives a good reference to different syles and methods.

As a lifelong animal lover, I am always hesitant to read books about animals, as some of them are too much for my super soft heart. I must say I absolutely loved all three of Bob Tarte's books, and in the process, felt like I gained a friend. Bob brings a deeply empathetic voice to animals lovers everywhere. The trials and tribulations of Bob and his wife Linda and their haphazard home full of needy animals was an absolutely joy to read. Bob's hilariously dry wit, his reluctant acceptance of Linda's adoptions which become very much his own, and the process by which his heart cracks open to embrace all of the creatures in their care, bring a very real and engaging perspective. Bob shares a lot of personal history and family quirks, to which so many readers can relate. As I read the book, I kept telling my husband, "You HAVE to read this!!!" knowing that he could relate to being on the receiving end of marriage to an animal rescue fanatic. I'm grateful to know that Bob and Linda are out there for those very fortunate animals who cross their paths. More books, Mr. Tarte, please!

Just realized I had not posted a review of this, one of my favorite cat books. Bob Tarte's writing is a delight-- reminds me of Robert Benchley with his self-deprecating humor. He has a great turn of phrase. Hapless Bob finds himself with a menageries of creatures, from parrots to bunnies to turkeys, along with five domineering cats. His humor may not be for everyone, but I laughed until I cried and bought extra copies of the book to give to others. All his books are excellent, and I highly recommend them. As I wrote on the bookblog back in 2012:I have a penchant for cat books. I do like nonfiction at times, but when it comes to animals I tend to regard nonfiction books with suspicion. Those are the only books I routinely flip to the back and read the end before I start the book so I know if the animal in question survives or if I need to lay in an ample supply of tissues.That’s how I approached Kitty Cornered:How Frannie and Five Other Incorrigible Cats Seized Control of Our House and Made It Their Home by Bob Tarte. Cats seemed okay at the end, so I decided I’d read a chapter or two. I had a pretty good idea of where this was going by the diagram of the house (including the area where black cat Agnes makes daily attempts on Bob’s life) and the cast of characters (“Lucy: snapping crocodile disguised as a ‘diluted tabby’”), but by the time I laughed my way through the introduction, I was sure he couldn’t sustain this level of humor.So help me, he did. He kept me laughing from the first chapter to the last and all the ones in between. Bob has a wonderfully semi-cynical, self-deprecating sense of humor and a keen eye for the absurd. I resisted the impulse to call friends up in the middle of the night to read passages from the book, but oh, the temptation was there. The true reason I didn’t was that I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to stop laughing long enough to read the passages aloud in understandable English and might be mistaken for an obscene phone caller.But I have to say that the sentence that completely won me over and made me know that I would love this book came right after Agnes -um, "accidentally" intersperses herself between Bob's foot and the stair: "I pitched backward, trying to avoid her, my hand attempting to latch onto the nonexistent rail which I had been intending to have someone else install for years."That is the story of my life.But I do wish his publisher had let him call it "The Funnel of Happiness."

Bob Tarte is back with his subtle and often unexpected humor. While I don't feel Kitty Cornered is as engaging as Enslaved by Ducks it runs a close second.Never would I think a few cats could cause such turmoil and angst, but then I have never had more than two cats at a time. Surely, any cat lover will see glimpses of their favorite cats in Bob Tarte's stories. It certainly made me know that I should never have more than one at a time, but odd things happen when it comes to cats and it looks like I could end up with many more if I am not careful.This is another interesting look into Bob Tarte's animal and anxiety filled life. I am ready to read more.

What can I say? I love cat; this author loves cats. One of the better books I’ve read detailing a memoir of a cat owner. This author has a command of the English language which makes for an amazingly well written book. I highly recommend.

Kitty Cornered is the funniest book yet from Bob Tarte, author of literary hits Enslaved by Ducks and Fowl Weather. I started bookmarking the pages containing the funniest parts, and now my book appears to have some sort of Carnivale headdress.You don't have to have a pet cat to enjoy this book; you don't even have to LIKE cats to enjoy this book. I imagine Mr. Tarte could write about hissing cockroaches and the result would be a laugh-out-loud volume of cockroach humor.This time around, Bob shares with us the unfolding events associated with growing his household from one cat to six, including the somewhat challenging former stray known as Frannie.In the process of achieving complete domination over Bob, his wife Linda and their household furniture, the cats provide them with examples of living in the moment and finding contentment, even when faced with illnesses or surgeries.When not overcoming figurative and literal obstacles placed in his path by the kitties, Bob takes on such challenges as rescuing a larger-than-expected flock of chickens from becoming Sunday dinners. Heading to his barn to feed the pardoned poultry, Bob barely escapes intact from the midst of a feeding frenzy, telling Linda, `They've formed a gang. It's like Night of the Living Dead out there'.With his engaging humor and a writing style that makes us feel that we are once again in Lowell, Michigan visiting our old friends the Tartes, Bob shows us the inside of his world, filled with fowl, felines and other funny stuff.

I bought this for my 7 year old celiac. We got it today in the mail and she could not wait to read it. I didn’t expect the emotions this child’s book would conjure up in me. Reading this was like reading about the last 9 months of my daughters life. I had to choke back tears a couple of times. My daughter loves this book and asked if she could take it to school tomorrow to help her friends understand her disease. I’m always looking for opportunities to remind her that her disease will not hold her back and she is still capable of anything she sets her mind too. I loved showing her that the author of this amazing book, is a kid just like her.Thank You Kristen, this book will help so many kids.

My 9 year old daughter (who has celiac disease) and I really enjoyed this book. It’s very well-written and the author does a great job of explaining what it’s like to have celiac disease. The illustrations are cute too. My daughter says that it’s nice to read about a girl feeling and experiencing the same things she has felt and experienced. Well done, Ms. Adam! You helped my daughter to feel less alone. I’ll definitely recommend this book to others, and will bring it to our next celiac doctor appointment to show them.

Wow! This book is so amazing and inspirational for my 10 year old daughter who was diagnosed about 18 months ago. Day to day life can be difficult to navigate. My daughter stopped and looked at me several times while reading this and said “I can relate!” She also said “She’s telling my story too!” and “wow, I’m not alone!” Thank you for writing and having this published!
