The book shows its age terribly: a wealth of irrelevant material and a plague of middle French quotations (untranslated, of course) which show either the author's erudition or her utter contempt for those who would read her work without knowing French (Merde!). Buy Robert Graves' White Goddess instead; or anything by Graves for that matter.

Because Eliot's "Waste Land" is taught in virtually every British and American lit survey course, the name "Jessie Weston" and the title "From Ritual to Romance" have become familiar to perhaps millions of readers throughout the world. However, if readers hope to get beyond the "trivial pursuit" question of the source to which Eliot was indebted and to a genuine understanding of the "Fisher King" myth, they will need to read that source for themselves. Though not a quick and accessible read, the book repays the reader's patience. Not only does it help bring Eliot's poem to life but it illuminates the poetic tradition from Chaucer to Eliot and makes more meaningful the numerous adaptations of the myth in modern culture--from David Lodge's "Small World" to Robin Williams' "The Fisher King." Not for a sophomore survey course, but definitely for any upperlevel course on Eliot or Arthurian legend.

So many of the quotes and excerpts are in French, German, Latin, etc and aren't translated! I don't get it...

English is NOT my mother tongue. But I have read a few boo books including the magnificent one-volume edition of The Golden Bough, which I keep reading with great pleasure and profit.I was tempted to give one star Miss Weston's book, but no guts; I have settled on two. Here are my reasons:1. The book needs a major editing. An able editor could free the book from its deadwood and unnecessary repetitions saving perhaps some 50 pages from this Dover edition. The able editor could also apply the rules of sentence and paragraph construction to ease the reader's access to and comprehension of the topic. Although there are some few lines that are clear tot he reader, this virtue cannot be found in any single page.2. All non-English citations should be translated into English and included in the text or in footnotes. To a reader who does not know those languages the citations are useless..3. An appendix ought to be provided to include the names of important personages in the book. The Dover edition itself is flawless: Good paper, good print, and good binding., .

The formatting is rubbish. Every line of the book is broken in half. For heaven's sake this should be blindingly obvious to any reviewer. Appalling that it is allowed for sale. I shall be seeking refund. I bought the other avaiable edition - which has proper formatting.

Based on other reviews I expected great things. What I got was a book written in the 20s which has never been updated. The quotes from other works are in French or other languages without translation. There is nothing here that has not been covered by newer works in greater detail.

This book, published in 1920, was a seminal influence on both T.S. Eliot in "The Wasteland" and Ernest Hemingway in "The Sun Also Rises". Eighty years later, it's still easy to see why. Although the book is short-just over 200 pages-it is almost unbelievably wide-ranging. As she deconstructs the elements of the various versions of the tales of the Holy Grail, Ms. Weston takes the reader globetrotting and time-traveling, from Vedic India to turn of the century Africa and Japan, with stops in between in Europe and the Middle East from antiquity to her own time. She relates the Grail stories to archaic sacred kingship, fertility rituals and dances, the rites and myths of Adonis, Attis and Mithra, as well as Gnostic Christianity. If you're interested in the Grail, the history of western culture, the history of religious ideas, or the transmission of myth and ritual into literary forms, "From Ritual To Romance" is truly a revelation.

Our son-in-law was returning from a two-week commercial salmon fishing trip and found the paperback version of this book in the airport in Seattle. He purchased it and told us that if we wanted to know what his experience was like this author nailed it. We purchased it for kindle so that we could all "live" the adventure. I was pretty sure before, but I now know absolutely that this is not a Summer Workation for me. However, I would still love to take an Alaskan Summer Cruise!As for the writing itself, just check out the author's credentials ... it's easy to tell that he has the skill set to create an engaging (and gripping) read.

I read Bill's book, "Red Summer" and did not put it down until I finished it. I have first-hand knowledge as to how I know Bill brought the characters and way of living to life; not because I was there but because Sharon, the main "character" is my cousin. He captured my cousins' (David and Ron as well) personalities and lives just as I have known them to be.I knew my cousin Sharon chose a hard life after she and I graduated from high school (I went to college and she went fishing; this was 1979 and she has done so to this day) but I never knew just how hard that life was for her, and I never, ever heard a complaint about it.Bill wrote of his life with Sharon as his captain, and with the folks of Egegik, in such a way that you feel as though you are right there with them all. He brings you in from the first page and you feel saddened at the end because you want to read more!Thanks Bill for writing of your experiences so descriptively that I felt I had spent wonderful, miserable, exciting, tiring, and rewarding summers with my cousin.- Barb

I'd like to witness to the accuracy of Carter's portrayal of Egegik summers and the fishing men (and some hardy women) do there.I worked eight summers in Egegik (1994-2001), starting in the cannery, set-netting for two summers and drift fishing for four. I lived and worked with two long time Egegik families (one not so much a family, but a clan). Carter has squarely captured the joy, exhaustion, laughter, anger, dissipation, recklessness, heroism, bawdiness, and adventure of Egegik summers. Everything he writes in his book is true and he does not exagerate (hard as that may seem!). The people he writes about (many I also knew) are just as lost, wild, mean, strong, and gripping as he portrays them.Carter's book isn't the last word about Egegik summers (there are many many books that could be written about the drift fishing, the cannery workers, the fish and game officers, and more), but it'd dead on accurate for the territory it covers. His book shows why so many of us went back summer after summer and still dream of doing so now that we've moved on to the rest of our lives.

Wow. It was so strange to come across this book. I worked on the Beach Gang up there for 4 seasons (1980 through 1983). I would never have dreamed that a book would be written about this tiny remote fishing village where I worked 30 years ago. It was a real treat to read. I had met the people behind the names, visited the places, and experienced the situations. The book took me back to all of the incredible experiences I had. I remember Ken Hunter. He used to come down to the docks and threaten us. Definitely someone to steer clear of. In many ways it sounds like little has changed up there, although the book made me aware of new threats to the area from mining interests. It is good that information is being brought to light. All in all, this book was a lot of fun. Very enjoyable. Thanks Bill.

The book divides itself between the commercial salmon fishing trade, on the one hand, and environmental politics/philosophy/policy on the other. When addressing the former, the writing is crisp and clear. There is lots of action, fascinating characters, and plenty to hold your attention -- just a good, solid read. He really puts you into the place, the action, and the people. When it shifts to environmental politics, philosophy, and policy, it helps a great deal if you share the author's point of view. A journalist by trade, he has strong opinions. If you don't agree, you can skip those parts and get back to the action, which is well worth the time.

Bill Carter is an excellent writer.Red Summer, brings the reader along for the adventure of Salmon Fishing commercially. This book talks about so much more than Salmon. It tells the story of life and reality in a small fishing village in Alaska. The poverty, and survival of those who can and those who can not leave. I didn't want to put it down.

Just finished this book. I found it to be a interesting narrative of an outsiders view of the alaskan fishing industry. I have friends who have worked up there in the past and i was always been intrigued with what it must be like. The author does a good job of explaining the work and the living conditions. If you looking for a light, easy read, this was an good book.

This book was a requirement foe rhe Six Sigma and Quality Management course I am taking, and the irony of buying a book that lacks the same quality it preaches about is laughable. When my book was printed, some of the pages were folded over, so there is overlapping text on some pages as well as crumpled pages that got an incomplete print. Luckily i also bought the Ebook so i can fill in the gaps. Very, VERY dissapointed in the physical quality of this book.

I don't have words to describe how well this book has been put together. An excellent guide on how an organization needs to be run in order to truly satisfy all its stakeholders.

I bought this as a reference book, mostly for exam reference purposes and just received it at Singapore.This is the much cheaper version of the 'normal version' (priced around 90 USD on Amazon) as it is printed for India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan (It says so on the book cover). but it's legal to use it in other countries, even in the US. The content is almost identical. So it's good value for your money to get a brand new book at this price!My complaint would be the quality of the book binding and the paper quality. The day I received the book, some pages are already coming out of the binding at the bottom edge. The paper is also thinner than the 'normal' version so I have to be careful while turning as it can get caught with your pen or something and get torn.I also have the ASQ CQE handbook (normal version) which I use primarily. and the binding is very good even after months of rigorous usage. Still very sturdy. So I recommend buying this book ONLY if you will just be using it as reference from time to time, as a backup reference or second reference, but not as your sole study book. I don't think it'll be able to withstand such handling.

I'm using this book to study for a Six Sigma Black Belt certification as determined by the institute. I've reached chapter 6 so far. It's rich in information but not complicated. However, I had to watch few lessons on YouTube to enhance my understanding of certain subjects especially statistics.

A really nice read on the end of the Ottoman Empire. Very readable for someone not as familiar.

This is a very well written and good book on the topic. However, it is primarily a political study of the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I. It is not so much a military study.The author, who teaches at Oxford, has looked at the Ottoman Empire and how it handled World War One. He works in Turkish and Arabic. There are many individual vignettes from individuals at ALL levels of society, from political policy carried on at the highest levels, to the various campaigns and the fighting that resulted. It is well-illustrated volume but includes only a handful of strategic maps of the Empire’s battlefields.The political history is excellent. The author has a firm grasp of the Young Turk movement, the JIHAD aspect of the Turkish war effort and the impact of the Arab on the Turk (and vice-versa). His discussion of the Armenian genocide is balanced and accurate and unlike many studies, does NOT ignore the brutal killing of thousands of Assyrians. An entire chapter is devoted to this and will inhibit sales in Turkey!But it is not so much a military study. The German battlecruiser GOEBEN & British battlecruiser INFLEXIBLE become battleships. The small old French battleship REQUIN becomes a cruiser, HMS AMETHYST becomes French (p137) and Ottoman losses are often based on old Allied accounts. German Admiral Souchon is mentioned once in the book, ignoring his large impact in the Black Sea. Edward Erickson’s I ORDER YOU TO DIE is in the bibliography but seemingly not consulted in some of the areas covered in the book. The Turkish Official military studies appear to be completely missing as well.The author does NOT note that after the Allied naval assault at the Dardanelles, in which they suffered major losses, the Turks were virtually out of artillery ammunition. One of the major postwar hindsight laments was that a second naval assault was not quickly made. The Allied losses could easily be made up while the resupply of vital ammunition was difficult in the extreme.This is a very good book, worth the read, much from the Turkish and Arab point of view. Definitive – no. Would a definitive study be longer – yes (and hence probably not published . . . )

Having read quite a few books this past year on World War I and Scott Anderson's excellent book on Lawrence of Arabia, this book offered a chance to read through many events, but from the Ottoman perspective. As the author mentions, he visited Gallipoli and realized that the Turkish losses at that epic battle are not widely known.Thus, the roots of the author's efforts to address this neglected area of history. The book is very well-written and gives a wide lens to the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire through the War itself. Some of the events described herein are pretty well-known, but otherwise I was blown away by how much I had no clue had really taken place. Examples include the Balkan Wars and the Ottoman effort against Italy in 1912-1913. These events influenced later decisions from both the Ottoman and Allied perspective and are well integrated.This is a well-written and easily read history. I found myself many times considering events from an alternate view of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and reading about battles only heard of from the perspective of the victor. This is not juts about Turkish losses, but of Arabs, Armenians, Greeks and others. Even though I am pretty knowledgeable about World War I history, there were many events I had really never heard of before. Even seeing many pictures of Ottoman soldiers in battle was revelatory and unexpected. The First World War was in many ways more cataclysmic than WWII in terms of the changes in the world and this book is a great expository on how that happened.This is an important book and well worthwhile to read for the general reader interested in the subject as well as the academic or policy specialist looking for more information to add to the body of knowledge of even present day Eastern Europe and the Near East.This book is recommended. An excellent companion book is by David Fromkin, A Peace to End All Peace, to read after this book.

I have read a lot of history lately following a visit to Venice. That visit pricked my interest with regard to how such a small island could become so powerful economically and militarily. That of course led me onto discovering the fight between the Ottoman Empire and Venice for control of the Mediterranean Sea. I then backtracked some 400 years to read about the beginning of the Ottoman Empire, the fall of Constantinople and followed the story in various history books through to the Fall of the Ottomans. This particular book clarified for me how the mess that is now the middle east was created. What a different world we might live in today if England, France and Russia eventually aided by USA had let the Ottomans join the Western Powers against Germany rather than leaving them no option to try to secure their own future by siding with Germany in WW1. The subsequent division of the middle east without consideration to various demographic issues into new countries is resonating still and will for many more years.I found the book well written and also gained great insight into why the Dardanelles became a graveyard for so many brave men on both sides and why the campaign was doomed from the beginning.

Having read lots of children's science books, we prefer them this way--carefully written, carefully illustrated, an emphasis on clear explanations. This topic lends itself to some very easy experiments which are nicely explained in the text. Good idea to cover all of these topics under one cover, as it allows kids to get a somewhat deeper understanding of the relationships between these natural phenomena. About a third of the book covers technological applications of the concepts, which is a good mix I think.

I love all the books that I got. I am very happ with the stuffs I got and the shipping were great. Thsnk you very much for your carring🤗🤗🤗
