I am not a consummate expert on Heschel, by any means, but I found these "Essential Writings" to be highly engaging and informative about Heschel's unique perspective on Judaism. This compilation made by his daughter provides just enough background information to give the beginning reader a sense of who Heschel was, why he believed the Jewish faith (and faith in general) is so important. For Heschel, the spirit of prophetic Justice, of making the world better, had to be guided by an inner life of reverential awe and of prayer. Experts of Heschel may find parts of his writings missing here, for in a career of so many writings, how can one volume summarize it all? Suffice it to say this book is a good way to whet the appetite of those curious for more of Heschel's thought.

A great book written by a great religious teacher of the 20th century. Mr. Heschel worked tirelessly with other religious leaders of different faiths to fight racism and prejudice in our world. His writings are inspiring for people of all faiths. His daughter, Susana Heschel, selected the writings included and writes an informative introduction for each essay.

For advanced students

Susannah Heschel is the single best writer and interpreter of her father's vision for modern Judaism. Her language is eloquent and her organization of the master's thought produce a very accessible work that will be as significant for progressive Christians as for Jews.

Perfect love the large color photographs. A great buy. So helpful!!! In response to the one negative review: As an experienced speech therapist who has been working with patients with aphasia for years, I wanted to share that this book is very useful especially for communication groups. At first glance, like the review stated it may look like just pictures and a few questions underneath but the images really help target descriptive language and conversation. For example, the strange picture of the man with the balloon over his face stimulates all kinds of conversations and speculation. It even got the reviewer to describe it! Exercises like the ones is this book are hard to come by and are very helpful for people with expressive aphasia. I have my patients try to describe the photographs to each other. Since they are not the typical pictures that most materials have it makes for some wonderful therapy.

I am a seasoned speech-language pathologist and I appreciate what this author is trying to do, in creating materials for aphasic individuals to use at home. I bought all 4 of these books at separate times, and this one last. If you have the others this is unnecessary, and there are better items out there. There are several things about this volume in particular that are confusing as far as organization goes, but someone who doesn’t have access to aphasia apps or other more expensive resources might find it helpful.

My dad has recently had a stroke. I purchased this book, along with the three others by Amanda Anderson. My dad took his books to his therapy sessions, and the therapist was enthused about these resources. He is using them daily!

This book lacks sustenance, there is no variety whatsoever. There is a photo and the reader has to tell what is happening in the photo, thats it. Some of the photos used are horrible quality and not clear and some of the photos are just weird e.g. a dirty drunk guy in the corner of a room with stains on his clothes holding a yellow balloon with a smiley face in front of his face. "What is going on in this photo". I don't have speech issues and I have no idea what was going on with that drunk guy. Very dissapointing purchase.Update to reviewer....There are free books you can download that have more material than this book for $40.00. My mother had been receiving speech therapy for 20 months now. I am very familiar with the material that's out there but I was not at the time of the purchase of this book. When I showed this book to her speech pathologist at the time, he too agreed it was poorly put together. If you are a speech therapist and recommend this book for $40.00 when better books are availble, something is not right.My mothers speech pathologist have given me great information both free and some not free. All this book offers is describe the photo, no problem solving, no yes or no, no describe how to do a task and the quality of the photos are horrible, in color.

Have bought all of these for my mom and she enjoys them. They are expensive which is my only complaint because people who have strokes and survive should have this material available to them for FREE. So minus 3 stars for the price.

After my husband's stroke, he suffered from significant expressive aphasia. He was very motivated to do whatever he could to heal, and he wanted daily activities in addition to the few he received during speech therapy. As an educator, I found myself cobbling together reading, writing, and math exercises for him to work on throughout the rest of the week. We were so grateful to find Amanda Anderson's books. They had the very best of what we were looking for. We are 9 months out from the stroke, and her workbooks are still being put to much use. I've done a good bit of searching and have yet to find anything that compares.The books are easy to use, clear, visually appealing and practical in application. We heartily endorse her entire series.

As a senior citizen American who was given a white-man-is-supreme dose of history in public school--Native Americans being "Indians" who took scalps of the "good" white guys--I knew so little about the real America. For the past many years I have lived in south Florida, in a county where 80% of the people speak Spanish as their native language. So this book, written by one of the NewsHour journalists, Ray Suarez, of Puerto Rican descent really interested me. I had no idea that Latinos have been here and part of our culture in ways that should have seemed more obvious.The book is very clear and filled with fascinating little pieces of information including the difficulties citizens of Puerto Rico, for example, had when their island became part of the United States after the Spanish-American War. They couldn't enter the mainland even though they were technically American citizens until one woman took the case all the way to the Supreme Court.And here's another, one that is somewhat personal for me. My 9th great grandfather, William Bradford, was the leader of the so-called first settlers, the Plymouth Colony ones. But well before 1620, St. Augustine, Florida, was settled by the Spanish and would remain a Spanish-speaking city well into the 19th century. The name Florida, of course, comes from the Spanish word for flowers: flora. So when Span-o-phobes (my term) speak about preserving English as the only language, they should be reminded that in Florida Spanish was spoken well before the English arrived to settle it. That is a little piece of history that, in my opinion, should be used more often when discussing immigration issues, for example.For a person who would like to learn more about this important element of American history, this is just the book for you. So readable. And by the way, PBS is doing a documentary series based on this book.It is just a wonderful book to read--and Mr. Suarez is a really good writer.

It will take time and patience to brew the ultimate stew with its unique new flavors unknown by most today. It will be like creating a new DNA that moves humanity where all are created equal. This book has given me a new perspective and understanding what I need to do to really love unconditionally.

Excellent information, a little dry reading, but worth the effort. As an Arizonan who grew up with Latino Americans and who deeply appreciates their enormous contributions to southwestern culture I am glad to see this volume.

The title says it all: How Latinos became Americans (they were always Americans in Spanish, but not supposedly in the "American" (as in US) sense of the word.I LOVE this book (and I have not yet finished it) but I have learned so much already! Nuggets of information that I never even imagined and many of which happened not too far away from where I live. It is written in a manner that educates as well as entertains and makes one want to delve deeper. One fact that amazes me is that Isabel de Tolosa was the grand-daughter of Hernán Cortés and the great grand-daughter of Moctezuma, which demonstrates just how Cortés took advantage of the people he "conquered." A perfect example of the blend that is LatinoAmerica, like it or not.Get the book and the DVD of the PBS program and settle down to appreciate some facts that will blow your mind! I purchased both!

Having studied the Spanish language in junior high school and high school and having close friends of various Latino ancestries, I thought I knew the Latino American history. Was I so wrong!In this book, Ray Suarez taught me invaluable insights about the United States of America, a nation that owes its birth to immigrants from the world over, and our brothers and sisters of Latin heritage. Mr. Suarez is right: when I was in high school, I learned about the great Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement; and even about the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, but nothing about the tremendous contributions of the Puerto Ricans, Mexican immigrants and Americans of Mexican heritage.American politicians of all stripes, colors and genders should read this book because most of what they say publicly about Latino Americans reflect the shallowest of knowledge about American history and the vast and important contributions of Latinos then, now and our future. The rhetoric of American politicians who staunchly oppose Latino immigration exposes how utterly ill-conceived such rhetoric is. I hope this book, or a similar one, becomes required reading for American high school seniors and college freshmen.What I am certain is that Corporate America and overseas companies that import their goods and services to America need to understand and appreciate the history that Mr. Suarez teaches in this exceptionally well written book, which amazingly captures 500 years of AMERICAN history in 200 pages, albeit the focus is largely on Latino Americans!Mr. Suarez poignantly notes: "We Americans often forget history. That makes whatever happened today the best and the biggest and the worst . . . and the first." Since we now live in the instantaneous communications age, it is even more crucial that we all understand and appreciate the historical lessons captured so succinctly, objectively, honestly and elegantly in this book. Remember, we Americans are all either immigrants or children or great, great grandchildren of immigrants. Tragically, there are but only a few people who are indigenous in the United States of America!The criticism I have for this book is how it concludes. The first 5 of 6 chapters captivated and captured my attention and imagination and fed my insatiable need to learn. Honestly, the last chapter (6), entitled "Where Are We Going", held my attention only for about 10 pages, after which I simply flipped through the rest of this book. But by then, Mr. Suarez had already fulfilled the promises he made at the beginning of the book to me, as a reader. Mission accomplished! Going forward, let's hope we view and perceive Latino Americans the same way we view and perceive ourselves. We share our American destiny with them.

There's no mention of "feline compatibility" if you want to take Fluffy.So, you may ask, how was the guide when it came to crunch time, i.e. putting boots on the ground?The hike we chose to trudge was the 6-mile roundtrip to the Warrior Rock Lighthouse (Hike #8) at the north end of Sauvie Island in the Columbia River. (Of course, this was after spending 90 minutes working out at the YMCA in Vancouver, WA. See what I have to put up with?!)The trailhead is about 25 road miles northwest of the Portland city center. The directions in BEDH proved to be clear, concise, and right on. After crossing over to the island and purchasing the day permit at Sam's Cracker Barrel Store, we drove the last 15.5 miles to the trailhead through pleasant rural countryside. It being the season, there were several farms displaying a "Pick Your Own Blueberries!" sign. As the BEDH indicates, the last two miles of the road and the parking lot at the trailhead are gravel surfaced. The only untoward incident occurred when we almost lost the permit down the crack between the front windshield and the dashboard. Lucky for us my wife has fingers smaller and nails longer than mine.Arriving at the trailhead, we studied the first Mile and Directions entry:"0.0 Start hiking north on the singletrack trail located next to a wood trail sign adjacent to the parking area. (Note: this section of the route can be wild and overgrown.)"Wild and overgrown? Gee, no kidding! What the book doesn't mention is that the overgrowth is almost all prickly blackberry bushes. If you insist on forcing your way through the vegetation, you'll likely come out the other side with clothes and exposed skin shredded as if attacked by a pride of Fluffies. So, since the parking lot also serves a beach, we elected almost immediately to forsake the trail and walk the sand the three miles to the lighthouse. This alternative route wouldn't have been possible in some places had the Columbia not been affected by the low tide condition in the Pacific Ocean miles away. (The receded waters also exposed many small clams to death from desiccation or predatory birds, so my wife spent an unreasonable amount of time rescuing them by tossing them back into the river. This perhaps doubled the time spent on the outward bound leg.) The low tide route along the beach is eminently serviceable except for the last few hundred feet when one must either adroitly pick a way over an ankle-twisting pile of rocks constructed as a breakwater to buttress the island's pointy end and lighthouse, or find a way up an overgrown embankment and into the woods to that interior path forsaken by us back at the parking lot.Along the way on the beach, we passed a cheery beach bum ensconced in a lawn chair and keeping an eye on two kites he'd launched into the breeze. Further on, the wreck of an old wooden vessel embedded in the shore provided a photo op. I'm not sure which was more derelict, the bum or the boat.Finally arriving at Warrior Rock Lighthouse (est. 1889), the local population of freshwater clams saved from extinction, we stopped long enough to eat a picnic lunch topped off with handfuls of ripe blackberries, which were also in-season. We elected to try and return as far as possible on the inland path, but had to abandon it yet again for the beach about a third of the way back because of the rampant undergrowth. Perhaps this was just as well as it was less breezy in the woods making biting insects peskier.The bum was still tending his kites. Perhaps he should be made a permanent part of the BEDH narrative.Back at the car park, my wife collected several cups of blackberries from the bushes bordering the lot, and which she enjoyed with yogurt over the remainder of our stay. For her, this was, I suspect, the highlight of the weekend. She loves fruit, especially when it's free versus $3 a basket back home.I should further mention that, during the time we were in Portland, the weather was the hottest it'd been all summer - over 100 degrees. So, even if you're walking along the river on level ground, take plenty of drinking water!Because of our inability to stay on the trail and therefore verify the particulars of the route described in BEDH, I cannot award 5 stars. However, Hike #8 seems otherwise accurately presented.(Note 1: If you walk south two miles along the sand from the trailhead parking lot instead of north to Warrior Rock, you'll pass through a clothing-optional beach. Just in case you're interested.)(Note 2: I emailed the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which is responsible for maintaining the trail through the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area to Warrior Rock, to casually mention the overgrown condition of the trail and wonder how my $3.50 permit fee was being spent. Of course, I didn't receive the courtesy of a reply.)

We used this book extensively during our recent trip to Portland and took 9 of the hikes. There were hikes in the city itself as well as hikes that could be done on day trips. The book fit into the pocket of my husband's cargo shorts, so it was easy to bring along on the hikes. Information and locations seemed accurate. Highly recommended!

very good information, I have done 5 of the 30 hikes in the book and they have been spot on with the details of the trails. the only con that I see is they give information to other map books and the information needs to be updated to the latest rev on the other maps, as the page numbers don't match up anymore.

We have several of these best day hike guides...They are excellent for short trips to a area...they pick out some of the best hikes that are easy to access...descriptions and directions are useful....as with anything its not one size fits all...some of the hikes will be too short for us... but often it brings us to a place with other hikes that are just what we wanted...is great for pointing you in the right direction and the book is small and light so it gets taken...

As a frequent summer visitor to the Rose City, I took this book along this year as a new volume in my collection of Portland walking/hiking guides. In addition to the terrific access the Portland public transit system provides for city walking adventures, for those who also have access to a car and want to do some day hiking outside of the city, I highly recommend this wonderful little volume. Brief descriptions of each hike give a good sense of what to expect, and clear directions along with easy to read and small, but accurate, maps provide sufficient detail for a satisfying experience on the trail. Many of the hikes are actually within the city of Portland, but several splendid local and state parks to the east, south and west of the city are included. The book is small enough (7" x 4 1/4") to fit easily into most hiking packs/bags or even large pockets. A very useful guide for any hiker wanting to sample the wide variety of easy Portland area trails!

I've used this several times to go out with my hiking friend. I love the details it gives but wish it would rate the hike, if it has inclines or just flat to help me plan for them.

Composed by Padma Sambhava in the late eighth century, this text minutely describes the "betweens" ( Bardos ) or after-death transition states. Thurman, who opens this work with a new section of preliminary prayers, gives a helpful commentary in terms Westerners can understand and boldface portions to be read aloud in the presence of the dead. He closes by appending Nyingma tradition works to the main text. This text has already been translated in 1927 and 1975, and some of Thurman's new translation choices are questionable. For instance, the West has adopted the term karma , which expresses the original meaning better than evolution --an alternative that obscures the personal responsibility emphasized in Buddhism. In addition, since Tibetan pronouns are sexually neutral, alternating his with her from verse to verse confuses. Still, Westerners will find this a colorful, awesome journey. Let me state this for the sake of clarity: in terms to profundity, this book is, in my opinion, unparalleled.We, here in the west, assume that we are among the most advanced nation(s) on the planet; that materialism, capitalism, even religious thought - are the acme of civilization. Then there's this book.I have been a voracious reader all my life, and have been exposed to thousands of pages of literature from countless brilliant minds; my advice to those of my ilk: read this book and be amazed at the complexity of it. Read the foreword by the Dalai Lama; you will come away shaking your head. The philosophy expressed by His Holiness is akin to one perfect thought honoring a process of liberation of the soul.And this: you would be in error to classify this book as religious; Buddhism? Buddhism is Science of Mind.

This basic, solid book on global business takes nothing for granted. Author Ernest Gundling teaches by example and illustration, and has something approaching a horror of direct statement. At the end of each chapter, where a bolder writer might insert points to remember, he provides, instead, lists of questions to consider. This book will tell you the skills you need and will make you very aware of your deficits, but it will not tell you precisely how to develop those skills. Gundling does provide a wealth of little, fictitious anecdotes about people who have done the right or wrong thing in global business. In a refreshingly humble approach, he sometimes uses his own blunders as examples of what not to do. We recommend his book, which brings to mind that Socrates was judged the wisest of men because he knew he knew nothing. Readers will come a few steps closer to such Socratic enlightenment. What you may not know about conducting yourself in international business would fill a book - this one.

Great read about out of the way places and how to get there.

I really enjoy travelogues and this did not disappoint. Loved reading about the author's experience and the Maldivian culture.

I've never visited the Maldives and have always had a vague impression of beautiful beaches and luxurious hotels - I'd gladly go if I won a ticket but maybe there's not enough to see and do to put it on my 'must visit' list.In this account, Tom Chesshyre takes advantage of the recent relaxation in rules that now permits tourists to travel anywhere in the nation, rather than just confining them to designated resort islands. This seems to have been an attempt to keep western ways from tainting an islamic nation, plus perhaps a business tactic - the resorts are owned by a handful of wealthy and powerful individuals.Staying predominantly in guest-houses and with locals, Chesshyre investigates Maldivian life. He learns of political corruption and human rights issues; the aftermath of the tsunami; the fears that this, the world's flattest nation, may in the near future be deluged as water levels rise. He meets Bangladeshi immigrants, lured with the promise of good jobs but now trapped earning a pittance and unable to afford the trip home. Crime, increasing islamization ... but also beautiful scenery and friendly locals.Perhaps not enough going on to make a terribly gripping narrative, but certainly the author has investigated all aspects of life and produced an informative work on a little-known nation.

What a great book! I loved it.Ever since reading this book, I've been dying to go on a non-resort trip to the Maldives. Tom Chesshyre's book really makes you want to do the same journey he does - travel on boats between islands with long and unpronounceable name, stay in local guesthouses, eat authentic Maldivan food, and learn about this country - the real country, not just the resorts.I read the book first a year or two ago. I'm now buying it for my kindle and trying to work out how to escape my life for a month so I can travel independently around the Maldives!
