About the Author
Al Gury chairs the painting department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he also teaches drawing. Gury exhibits his work at the F.A.N. Gallery and has shown at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous other galleries and museums around the country. He is the author of Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting and Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice. He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Clear, informative, great pictures - got on recommendation of art teacher. i think it's much better than the same titled book by another author that costs 3 times as much!
It's hard to find good books on Alla Prima painting, but this is one. If I'd found it several years ago, it could have saved me considerable trial and error, but I still found much to interest me here. Gury covers several styles (direct, indirect, color and tone blocking, wipe out), and subject matter (portraits, figures, still life, landscapes), providing a good mix of basics and advanced techniques.
Love this book! I'm a huge fan of John Singer Sargent and could not escape having this book in my library. Mr. Gury also teaches painting classes in Philadelphia and I've been working up the nerve to take a class of his very soon.
While studying Alla Prima painting I was referred to Alla Prima II by Richard Schmid as the holy grail of Alla Prima painting books. I also purchased Al Gury's book and found it far better for the learning painter that the more expensive Schmid book. I would heartily recommend Mr. Gury's book to gain excellent painting instruction and also save money.
It’s a good book for any artist to keep in their library for reference, photography is beautiful and techniques well explained. That said, it’s nothing new, with info that has been repeatedly presented elsewhere in other books.
Alla Prima ( also an art term for direct "all-at-one-time' painting in oil or acrylic) is very beautifully illustrated and the author has a firm grip on the technique. It is a book that will appeal to more experienced painters and those with ability. A beginner would be at a disadvantage unless they would have some basics skills.
Knowing Al Gury personally he is just a wonderful of a person and he is a painter and writer.He takes so much pride in his work and this book shows his passion, talent and love for painting.A gorgeous coffee table book that is educational, informative as well as entertaining. Can definitelystir up conversation if left on the table top of a living room!
Admittedly I'm not crazy about Al Gury's work but I love his books. He shows the work of a lot of other artists that I like. I look at this book frequently.
