THIS BOOK IS BAD. IT IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. WE TOOK IT TO DC WITH US AND IT WAS TERRIBLY USELESS. THERE WERE NO PICS, NO MAPS, NOT EVEN A SUBWAY MAP. RECOMMENDATIONS WERE OUT OF DATE AND SAD. EASTERN MARKET WAS WORSSE THAN A BACKYARD GARAGE SALE. YELP WAS MORE USEFUL AND FREE. THIS WAS MY FIRST AND LAST FROMMERS GUIDE. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR PUTTING OUT A BOOK DISGUISED AS A GUIDE. IT MOST CERTAINLY IS not not not NOT a guide. you will be happy if this helps and you do not buy. Please find something else. the few of us who wasted our money is enough.
I just got back from D.C. after using this guide. I constantly looked through this book for ideas/suggestions on where to go and what to do. Comments on the museums (open/close times, etc) was extremely helpful. However, I wish the book had more info on wheelchair accessibility for each museum. I would suggest to Frommers that a little wheelchair accessible icon be located somewhere at the beginning or end of each museum/restaurant that is mentioned.
I bought the Kindle edition of this book just to see what it would be like, and I knew I would be getting other guide books for Washington DC. I had read some reviews of an earlier Kindle edition that said the guidebook didn't work well in this format, which is true to a point. If you are only buying one, get a paper book. But if you plan to get several, and you read this one on Kindle for PC like I did, you won't be disappointed by the information presented.One neat thing about this edition is that the table of contents gives chapter headings, as well as sections within the chapters that give a very good idea of what you can find there. Navigation to those parts of the book is as easy as a click. You can also bookmark pages you want to come back to. The bad--flipping from an entry for a hotel or restaurant or whatever to the map of where you can find it is not as easy as with a book. The other low point is that you don't get the pullout map provided with the paper book.******Amazon would do a lot better with these books on Kindle (especially when you can read them on a device like the Samsung Galaxy Tab) if it was possible to zoom in on maps and pictures.As far as content goes, this books offers more of a historical overview than some, less than others. The entries for attractions, hotels, and restaurants may have special icons for great value, great find, good for kids, and several others. This is great information to have.Where this book shines is in presenting information on various modes of public transportation, whereas some of the others just gloss over everything but the Metro.When we take our trip, I'm going to put this book on the Tab for easy reference, not to mention not having to carry around all that paper.
Every time I travel I get a travel guide several months before and prepare for the trip. This one had lots of great info and was a very big help to me in making the most of this wonderful trip to DC.
This book has great color pictures, and great information including how many days (or months) in advance that you need to order tickets for various tours like the White House and the Capitol. It's an incredibly valuable tool for planning a trip to Washington DC. Each place to visit includes a website and telephone number as contact information and what Metro lines to take. The accomodation and dining sections are great too.
EXCELLENT! We found reasonable places to dine and to stay. Frommer's suggestions are the best. I'd recommend Frommer's to anyone who travels whether to Washington or to another city.
Frommer books always introduce me to places and history I knew nothing about. And they're very practical for finding a place to stay or eat. I almost always agree their assessment of a site.
This book was very helpful in planning our vacation, and the enclosed map that came with it was an absolute necessity. It showed all of the museums, monuments and points of interest we wanted to visit. It also noted the name of the nearest Metro stop and the color of train to take. Extremely useful and highly recommend. Seller was great, fast and easy. Book was in condition that was promised.
