Review

A Bead and a Prayer is one of the most accessible and downright delightful books I have ever read on prayer itself, not to mention being far and away the most informative about the making and use of prayer beads. Vincent has given us a veritable treasure trove of history, practical counsel, and, most important, loving instruction. --Phyllis Tickle, founder of religion department, Publishers Weekly and prolific author on religion/spirituality, including "The Divine Hours" seriesA Bead and a Prayer engages our God-given senses of touch and sight to coax prayer from the head deep into the heart. A groundbreaking book even for those of us who don't have a clue how to string beads. Vincent's encouragement and instructions have convinced this novice-artist that even I can do it! This is a must-read for anyone on an intentional journey to God. --Linda Douty, Spiritual director, retreat leader, author of Praying in the Messiness of Life

When I read about using beads in prayer, I was more than a little intrigued. A former Catholic, I viewed any attempt to put a rosary in my hand as a plot to get me back to Mass, but Vincent's book deals with a new prayer tradition, that of Anglican prayer beads. And instead of having set prayers for each bead, being able to "freelance" my beads freed me to explore different ways to pray.Using Vincent's model, my craft-er daughter made a set of "manly" beads (hey, I'm old-fashioned, so sue me) of wood and ceramic beads on a leather strap. And I was delighted with the product, and with Vincent's coaching. The first time that I used the beads that I designed (see accompanying photo), I prayed for 25 minutes, completely focused on prayer, and not once mentally wandering off to create another to-do list.If you find that you have difficulty in engaging in prayer, give Vincent's book a read, and the beads a try.

An excellent little book on Christian prayer beads. The title really nails the topic as a bead and a prayer is how it works. Kristen has put together some good background to help develop a general understanding of the development and purpose of Christian prayer beads. Being an Anglican I prefer to call them Anglican Prayer Beads, but it is one in the same. The only issue I have with her writing is she adds an additional bead after the Invitatory bead, which she calls the Resurrection Bead. I understand her purpose, but that would not be my choice as an AnglicanHer book is well written with lot of good ideas for the purchase of prayer beads and making your own. That is a great concept for a individuals or a group to pursue as a project. In fact she has good outline for a class on prayer beads with well thought out study questions. I am currently teaching a class on Anglican Prayer Beads and using Kristen's book as a resource. I highly recommend A Bead and Prayer.

I was introduced to Protestant (Anglican) prayer beads and Kristen Vincent through a link from my devotional magazine, The Upper Room. Kristen has made prayer more direct and more beautiful through her blog, her beads and now her book. Her presentation is personal but organized in a simple format and makes using prayer beads a vital part of my prayer time.

I bought this book, A Bead and a Prayer, after seeing it mentioned somewhere in another book, magazine, or website (I don't remember). I had it on my wishlist for a while but finally caved. The price is a bit steep for the size of the book (I was kind of surprised when I opened the package), but the information is really neat. It's a quick and easy read walking you through what they are, how to make them, a 4 week devotional, and then examples on how to use them (even some for young children, which is actually where I plan on starting for myself to ease into it). It says that prayer beads are to be used as a tool to build your communication and relationship with God, like a hammer helps build a house. It has me really excited! The author describes her difficulty with prayer and why she struggled and it is like she is talking to me! I have ADD and a face to face conversation is hard enough, a quiet prayer time is near impossible. I have tried journaling but found it more of a distraction than a help. I am really hoping to combing the beads and journaling eventually (listing what each bead is representing so I have a record to track requests and answers). I am just shocked at how such a small, simple book could be such an inspiration. I haven't read through the devotionals yet, but am a few pages into the first one and think they will all be equally helpful. It was worth it just for the intro chapter(s) that I know will help jump start my lagging prayer life.I plan on putting together a program series for the teens in our church so they can make their own then work through the devotional.

I own a set of Kristen Vincent's prayer beads and they are truly a work of love. This book does compliment the beads, but my expectations...solely based on the price of the Kindle version of this book, were not met. While the book is meant to be read over several weeks, I read it in 30 minutes. It does have some faithful content and does help the reader understand how prayer beads can be used to talk with God. I would have given this four stars had the pricing been more in line with similar books that have very limited content.

This is a great way to start using prayer beads if you have never used them. An interesting summary of their history and she gives instructions for making your own (don't buy them! Make them--very fun and I've now taught dozens to make prayer beads). There are prepared prayers and fill in formated prayers. The author does a great job encouraging your own personal expression as you design your prayer beads as well as your prayers! Some of them are simply to take a deep breath in and listen as you move across the beads. I highly recommend this prayer tool for the young and old alike!Kristine Webb

This is a great introduction to using Anglican prayer beads (not to be confused with the Roman Catholic rosary). It not only explains HOW to use prayer beads with different types of prayers, but also WHY use them. And as a bonus, there is a chapter on how to make your own set of prayer beads. If you have never used prayer beads, this is an excellent primer and is a wonderful way to begin a Lenten discipline. If you're already using prayer beads, this won't offer much that's new or different.

I have enjoyed reading this book and doing the exercises in it. The author offers a coupon to her Etsy store so that you can buy a set of prayer beads or a kit to make your own. Definitely a help in prayer for a mind that wanders like mine does.
