The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 marked the emergence of Japanese as a first rate military power. The land aspects of that fight are selectively examined in this new and well-written Osprey Combat Series book by David Campbell. The narrative reveals an interesting trial of strength between the Russian and Japanese armies, matching the stubbornness of the Russian troops against the tactical suppleness of their Japanese opponents.The author's focus is on the struggle for control of Russian territory in Manchuria, including the key naval base of Port Arthur. The narrative explores three combats as examples of the fighting. It includes the usual comparison of the two armies in the Far East and an excellent selection of maps, battle diagrams, period photographs, and modern illustrations. The analysis offers some interesting insights on the two armies, including the suggestion that the Russian soldiers were consistently failed by their leadership, while the Japanese may have been dangerously overextended by theirs. Well recommended as another important piece of Osprey's recent coverage of the Russo-Japanese War.
