Mouw is one of my favorite contemporary writers/theologians/leaders. Always makes me think freshly about old assumptions. Civility is what our country/world needs right now and this book is on target.

Full disclosure--Rich Mouw was my mentor, supervisor, and friend for twelve years. This is vintage Rich Mouw--warm, compassionate, thoughtful, evangelical, and thoughtful. Highly recommended.

A real memoir catching the spirit and passionate themes and emphases in Mouw's life and ministry. Mouw's repeated emphases on civility are badly need in today's world of divisions.

Richard Mouw is past president of Fuller Seminary, and is perhaps best known for his dialogues with Mormon scholars. Although he did not originate the term, as he acknowledges its origins in Martin Marty, he is also known for advancing and practicing “convicted civility.” This is the practice of engaging others with which one has serious disagreements out of a strong sense of evangelical convictions, and in respectful ways. This volume functions as a memoir for Mouw, who discusses his life’s journey related to the influences in shaping this form of engagement.Over the course of sixteen relatively brief chapters in a volume of 223 pages, Mouw shares various elements that have come to shape his approach to others in conversations in the public square with whom he strongly disagrees. Very early on Mouw found intellectual refuge in the Reformed tradition and the work of John Calvin. Later in the book he acknowledges the difficulties this theological perspective presents to engagement with others given its emphasis on “the elect” and the “non-elect,” and questions as to why one should bother to interact with those in the latter category. But Mouw found room within Calvin’s writings that opened up a journey of exploration into the construction of a method for engaging others. He writes that “encouragement from Calvin himself has inspired me actively to learn from folks with whom I disagree on important issues, both in studying non-Christian writes and in engaging in direct dialogue with persons representing other theological and religious systems” (12).In what follows I will highlight various facets of Mouw’s discussion where he shares what he has learned that enables conversations characterized by convicted civility.In Chapter 3 he addresses various concepts of the image of God, and finds “human commonness” an important consideration. Chapter 5 finds Mouw drawing upon his graduate studies in philosophy, and he shares insights he appreciates, not only from philosophers who might be considered friendly to Christianity, but also those seen as hostile to Christian thought, such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.In Chapter 7 discusses engagement of others in the public square in civility in intriguing ways. He says, “It is itself a crucial way of anticipating the final chapter of the [Christian] narrative, an important preparation for the eschaton” (87, emphasis in original). Chapter 8 finds Mouw wrestling with the Reformed understanding of the fall resulting in humanity’s total depravity. Here he interacts with the Anabaptist thinker Klaas Schilder and his idea of “a sunousia, a being-together, among all men” (96). Mouw picks up on this and says that this “shared human being-together, is an important reinforcement for spiritual epistemology that allows for a broader cultural conversation” (97).Chapter 9 is concerned with issues related to context. In particular, Mouw explores identity labels and theologies that move beyond the issues of concern to Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant traditions. In this discussion he calls attention to “the diversity of cultural contexts and ... our own cultural location” (135) which shapes the way we view the world and others in it. In Chapter 12 the author returns to his discussion of a Reformed evangelical perspective, and this segment concludes by expressing an idea that he will return to later in the volume. He says, “But when I encounter a teaching that I find strange, and even offensive, I try to remind myself to ask what specialization might be at work in the other person’s way of viewing things and how I might learn from it” (152).Those interested in understanding Mouw’s rationale for how he approaches his exchanges with adherents of other religions will find the last few chapters of this book of particular interest. In Chapter 12 he discusses an idea that will resonate most with many conservative evangelicals with a consideration of “When Truth is Distorted.” Given the concern for doctrinal orthodoxy and fears of spiritual contamination, many evangelicals tend to emphasize an apologetic and boundary maintenance approach in such matters. But while Mouw is aware of such concerns, this is not his way of dealing with what are viewed as falsehoods from other faith traditions. For him, “The distorted-truth approach [from H. Richard Niebuhr’s approach to culture] has created for me a presumption that I can learn something from thinkers with whom I radically disagree on important topics” (159).In Chapter 14 Mouw explores the influences on his approach to interfaith encounters. He mentions appreciation for Stephen Neill, who took issue with the kind of comparative theology method found in much of popular evangelicalism. Instead, Neill encouraged Christian to try to look at other religions from the inside “in order to probe the deep questions that are being asked within that framework” (182). In addition, this would also entail “not succumbing to the much-too-common temptation to win rhetorical victories and thus cut off the potential for interesting conversations” (182). Another item of interest in this chapter is an idea Mouw takes from Herman Bavinck, the suggestion of “’bracketing of interests in evangelism and apologetics as we engage in conversations with people of other faith communities” (183). Mouw recognizes that there is “theological risk” in this process, but feels that it is wrong not to take such risks in this process. Also in this chapter Mouw interacts with Leonard Swidler, who is famous for his “Dialogue Decalogue,” that includes an emphasis on an accurate and empathetic understanding of the other. In the remainder of this chapter the author discusses some of his thoughts on Mormonism given his interaction with its leading thinkers and adherents over the years. He discusses the various strands of Mormon doctrinal thought, and urges evangelicals to emphasize “gentleness and respect” (1 Pet. 3:115) rather than rancor in an area of interfaith engagement that has “been dominated by soteriological and apologetic concerns” (192). Near the conclusion of this chapter he says that, “The challenge is to seriously engage other religious perspectives while being very careful not to say anything in our theology of religions that would deny what is at the core of our own deepest convictions” (192).In Chapter 15 Mouw addresses the relationship of holding to sound doctrine in particular areas to the question of salvation. Again he turns to Bavinck as an influence, and in Mouw’s view the link between sound theology and salvation has been too strong. Surely sound theology is important, but as Mouw notes, many Christians would fail in their ability to articulate detailed doctrines, and yet there status before God is not in question. Instead, their devotion to God in Christ is at issue. After considering how Mormons express themselves through their hymns Mouw opines: “This is yet another case where genuine piety trumps defective theology” (204). This volume concludes with the author wrestling with his own lingering theological concerns about the approach he has taken, and why he has been so personally motivated to do so in this way. Early on in this chapter he states that:“I am a Calvinist who has tried to promote a ‘convicted civility,’ a moderate tone in dialoguing with people whom we evangelical types disagree with on serious matters, and a posture of learning from what I see as the scholarly and cultural gifts distributed by God to the larger human community” (208).Those with a specific interest in learning more about Mouw’s theology of cultural and theological interaction in the public square, and those looking for insights for their own journey in this sphere, will find this memoir of interest.

In his newest book, Adventures in Evangelical Civility: A Lifelong Quest for Common Ground (Brazos, 2016) Richard Mouw brings the issue of civility and commonness to the forefront as he reflects on his intellectual journey of half-century.It is a wonderful book one two levels: First, Mouw's journey to reach across all sorts of lines - faith, political, and philosophical- illustrates his deep seated desire to truly find "human commoness." Second, Mouw's behind the scenes look at his journey as a member of the Reformed branch of Christianity and the challenges and opportunities being part of that branch brought to his life and thought is interesting and revealing.Mouw's journey is a journey in two worlds - the world of public life and faith. It is a journey people of faith all make - how to live into worlds that is often very, very different.What I appreciated about this book is Mouw's passionate endeavor to finding commonness in people as more than a humanist pursuit but as a pursuit of seeing the image of God in everyone. His quote of the late Arthur Holmes' of living in the tension between "epistemic humility" and "epistemic hope," resonated with me.One of the challenges of reading this book was that Mouw's journey takes the reader across a wide swath of 20th century philosophy, politics, and theology. He engages in a dialogue with the reader and with those he admires and respects as well as with those he disagrees with. So it was hard to follow his line of thought at times.However, this is a rich book of one whose Christian faith, combined with deep thinking, was the basis for engaging society on the important issues of the day from a view that every human being is created in the image of God. I think that Mouw's journey needs to be noted and studied.I liked this book for both the warmhearted faith and deep thinking about the foundational principles of human existence and the vast implications of those principles. It would make a great text book for seminary classes in the study of contemporary religious thought as well as understanding one key insiders' view of contemporary American Calvinism.I gave Adventures in Evangelical Civility three stars on Goodreads.Note: I received an electronic galley copy of this book from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for a review. I’m not going to lie. I’m sort of a Hamilton fan. Having previously read Ron Chernow’s compelling biography, Alexander Hamilton, I already knew Hamilton’s wife, Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, was an intriguing and resilient woman. Also, having read America’s First Daughter by historical fiction novelists Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie, I knew this dynamic writing duo wouldn’t do anything less than exceptional in telling Eliza’s story; therefore, I highly anticipated My Dear Hamilton. Dray and Kamoie far exceeded my expectations. I absolutely devoured My Dear Hamilton from beginning to end!There’s no doubt that Eliza Schuyler Hamilton lived through an exciting time in American history. She was right in the center in witnessing the birth of a new nation. She’s mostly known as the wife of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States; however, there’s so much more to this woman with a compelling life story. I very much appreciated that her life before marriage is portrayed in My Dear Hamilton. We get to know the endearing relationships she had with her family, especially her father and sisters Angelica and Peggy. It’s with these strong familial bonds that she would deeply rely on later in life.At its heart, My Dear Hamilton is very much a love story filled with betrayal, sacrifice, loyalty and forgiveness. Yes, she was indeed a devoted wife and mother, but she was also characterized in this book as a woman possessing admirable inner strength. Through their intensive research, the authors expertly shape, not only Eliza’s journey through life, but her emotional well being as well. Readers will celebrate with Eliza through her happiest of times, feel utter heartbreak as she endures public humiliation, and be encouraged by her sheer determination and accomplishments.Eliza outlived her husband by 50 years. In her 97 years, it’s fair to say that Eliza Hamilton had loved and lost so much. Her emotions are so thoughtfully detailed with the passing of the most important people in her life. I was very curious about her life after her husband’s infamous duel. There’s a scene towards the end of the book, and this is not a spoiler, where she literally lays everything out in front of her to try to make sense of what she’s learned. I found this moment to be poignant, sorrowful, and something totally relatable as humans. I’d like to think that scene was how it really played out years ago, but it was surely memorable the way the authors depicted how she may have dealt with that part of her life.If Eliza Schuyler Hamilton were alive today, I think she would applaud how Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie interpreted her life though My Dear Hamilton. Another brilliant and fascinating read from these talented authors!

After America's First Daughter, my expectations from this team were high -- but they were exceeded in every way as I read this truly impressive book.It is an incredible, surprising, and altogether lovely tribute to the woman who stood beside one of the most unknowable, irascible, energetic, and passionate of the many people who contributed indelibly to the foundation of this nation. I am left both humbled at the accomplishments of the Hamiltons, and uplifted by the depiction of Eliza.More than that, though, I am awed by the scope of the work that Dray and Kamoie undertook. It was like taking a behind the scenes journey in the founding of our great nation through the eyes of Eliza Hamilton. What a journey it was! There is so much content in this book surrounding the Founding Fathers and what efforts and sacrifices they went through to establish our country. I learned so much!The authors did a fantastic job of researching and creating a history of Eliza Hamilton based on facts and documents. Her story has so many facets to it. From her childhood and family devotion, to her early adulthood and meeting Alexander Hamilton, to her marriage to him and the life they had together. It was a marriage that was loving and supportive but there were also struggles and difficult times. Eliza was Alexander Hamilton's champion and believed in his love for the country and his desire to make it succeed. This story is a saga that I loved reading and made me appreciate even more what it took to begin our great nation.I appreciate the in depth conversation at the end of the book about what the authors created the story on and their research into writing this novel.

This book was historical fiction at its best. The characters were well developed, believable and heroic. Betsy or Eliza as she was called was a remarkable woman. Some things that happened in this book I did not know and other events I had forgotten. This book brought it all to life. What turmoil occured in the early days of our independence. Backstabbing, lies, affairs, sex scandals and friends becoming enemies were part of the new government. History seems to be repeating itself in today's world. Eliza finally has success in having her husband recognized for all he did. He was a brilliant founder with a brilliant wife.

This cookbook arrived yesterday and I took considerable time looking through every recipe last evening. Many call for unusual proportions and ingredients, for example, a bean dish that calls for 2 Tbsp of beans--seriously? There was a chicken dish with drumsticks as an ingredient but later in the recipe, it says to remove "thighs" from the IP. There are unfinished instructions and sentences, bad grammar, and misspelled words and yes, a proper book should not contain that many errors, especially a cookbook. I can't trust it to be accurate. I will be either returning it or tossing it into the fireplace.

The first recipe I tried didn’t even mention two of the ingredients in the instructions. It’s a poorly organized book that appears to have been thrown together to jump on the Instant Pot bandwagon. I don’t think it was even edited.

Although I have only read a sample and the first chapter of this book so far, I deeply appreciate the HUGE amount of work the authors have done. Not only have they pulled together primary and secondary reports from the earliest days of geology and paleontology, works that most of us would never have access to, they also quote extensively from these sources so we can "hear" what the early geologists and paleontologists had to say about their fossil finds, the circumstances under which they were found, and the geology of the strata in which they were found. The authors lay out not only reports on the original finds but also subsequent reports supporting or not supporting the conclusions drawn from these finds. I've been wanting to read the original reports (rather than condensed and heavily edited versions) for quite some time and didn't know how to find them. I for one thank the authors for doing this for me.

Do you like Weird Science? This book, almost 1000 pages, has a lot of it. I bought a library-released hardcover in perfect condition, and it's worth a look.There is ample evidence of a 10,000+ yr. old fairly high tech civilization before the last ice age. They had crude 'computers' (more like the very first calculators, but slower), agriculture advanced past today in some ways, significant seafaring ability, map making skill, astronomy carried to levels past Renaissance levels, and critically the ability to accurately tell time. We are just now looking at places like Gobekli Tepe. There may enough clues to solve this mystery.Then there's this book. It's a collection of way out-there stuff, such as unbreakable spheres dug out of billion year old solid rock. Fun to read, and some of it is likely even true. People tend to discount the edges, so push those edges WAY out there and look at it all. I do.

At first I thought the authors would provide an objective, scientific evaluation of archaeology findings. They punish the reader with extraneous observation by archaeologists from the 1800's and early 1900's whose ideas have been ignored by the scientific community. They then suggest how each supports their theories. Other reviewers have suggested they look for studies that support their Hindu beliefs. Recent discoveries do support humans emerging perhaps 2 million years ago but the authors wish to go back further. Frankly I'm lost in the presentation of details in this book. It is not organized well and fails to make a pragmatic logic for their views. This overwhelming presentation presents some ideas but fails to prove its theme.

I found it to be a really interesting read. Within what has been found along with his theories, he does a good job giving the information that scientist on the other side of man's history have to offer. He can kind of get a little drawn out on the information, but is definitely a book worth reading.

I really liked this book. The information was great, but I was more impressed by the extensive amount of research done, especially since the authors clearly went out of their way to do their homework.I find that most people who dismiss this book are not because the documentation isn't sound or the conclusion isn't logical. Instead, it's because they don't like the conclusion or dismiss it out of hand because of the writers' beliefs. However, the writers address that very issue in the introduction.If you're looking for a clearly-written book resting on sound documentation relying on source material written by professional archaeologists, pick up this book. If the size intimidates you, read the condensed version, The Hidden History of the Human Race instead.

I was expecting the full Michael Cremo book but this shorter version covers enough show the crazy timelines in books trying to push Darwin ane missing many points and discoveries everyone should know about.... If you only know what they teach in school.... this is a nice brain upgrade to look beyond just that evolution theory 101. (man was around a very long time and did not climb out of the woods and build pyramids)

As an engineering student that is minoring in anthropology, I actually read the whole book to get an insight into our human history. I found the book interesting and I believe one definitely has to keep an open mind as to what the truth is, pertaining to our origins. I thought the authors presented their information in an orderly manner, and the did their best to explain the logic behind their theories, which made sense to me since I had taken archeology classes. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to understand the topic from a different perspective, although it might not really be possible to get to the truth, because of the way or scientific system is set up, I believe any reasonable person can see that not all of the situations covered by the authors can simple be written off as coincidences. I actually used the book to write an essay for one of my archeology classes and got an -A- since I guess some of the topics covered could not be disproven. Overall if you have an open mind and are willing to put in the time this is a great book to read.

About the Author

Alexandra H. Solomon, PhD, is staff clinical psychologist, member of the teaching faculty in the marriage and family therapy graduate program, and clinical assistant professor of psychology at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. In addition to her clinical work with couples and individuals, Solomon teaches graduate and undergraduate students. One of her courses is Northwestern University’s internationally renowned “Building Loving and Lasting Relationships: Marriage 101,” which combines traditional and experiential learning to educate students about key relational issues like intimacy, sex, conflict, acceptance, and forgiveness. Solomon’s work has been widely cited, and her articles on love and marriage have appeared in The Handbook of Clinical Psychology, The Handbook of Couple Therapy, Family Process, Psychotherapy Networker, and other top publications in psychology. Her work also appears in O Magazine and The Huffington Post, and she is a frequent interviewee and contributor for the Oprah Winfrey Network, Yahoo! I was disappointed in this book. Ive been married 30+ years, already have done the work of how I was raised. A lot of the book is about what your family life was like as a child and how that affects your present day relationships. If youve already worked thru that then this book is not for you. Much of this book is directed towards 20 somethings. Dating or first time newlyweds. Its more professor-student stuff.

This book offers so much positive guidance and encouragement for anyone who wants to improve communication skills in any type of close relationship. I truly enjoyed how the author used real-life examples, in some cases from her own personal life. It was extremely helpful that she included exercises for the reader to elucidate how the concepts she presents have direct relevance in daily life.

Excellent, really informative, really well written and interesting to read. Also, innovative topic— not just the same old “pseudo psychology relationship BS” you find in many pop psychology books. The ideas in this one are really novel, and also applicable, which makes it worth your time!

She touches on many important aspects of relationships without being too wordy or lengthy. Getting straight to the heart of the matter and giving the reader resources/exercises for change at the end of each chapter. Great book. Great resource!

Don't waste your money on this book, not worth the paper it was printed on. Filled with a lot of immature cliches, and simple aphorisms.

I really got a lot out of this book! I did all the exercises though. Even interviewing parents. Don’t skip the exercises!

I very rarely read books in the relationship and self help genre, but this one was highly recommended by a great friend, so I decided to give it a go. I'm really glad I did! Dr Solomon paints a realistic and honest view of individuals, couples and relationships that is very refreshing. Rather than being prescriptive about how to find love and connection, she writes with humor and grace about the possible paths. Every person's journey will be unique and that's to be celebrated, but there are commonalities in all of us to be shared and thought through. Beginning with themes of personal accountability and honesty with oneself to effective communication and learning to trust yourself and your partner, Dr Solomon's prose hits home. It makes sense. She acknowledges that the path is not easy, straightforward, without effort, ups and downs and reward. I appreciated her real and nuanced view. Loving Bravely is sweet, funny, honest, insightful and it inspired me to take a deeper look at myself and how I think about love and intimacy.

I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Loving Bravely. I had heard about it and about the author, Dr. Solomon, through social media. Dr. Solomon teaches a Marriage 101 class at Northwestern University and I have seen her interviewed before. I thought what could be better then a book about finding love from the person who actually teaches the course. I went ahead and pre-ordered the book so that I would have it as soon as it was available. The book did not disappoint. Dr. Solomon takes you through 20 lessons to help you find the love that you want. She doesn't do it in a preachy way. In fact, it's written in a friendly, thoughtful, witty and many times funny manner. She even interjects pieces of herself and her own relationship in the book and her interactions with her children. This is a book that I will reference time and time again. It's not a once through read. You need to go back and re-read and really practice the lessons that she spells out. They are not easy. It is hard to change behavior and learn from the past and not use it as a crutch. But, this book helps you do it if you follow along. I recommend it for anyone looking to learn about themselves, how their past relationships effects their present self, and move forward to find love. So, basically, this book is for everyone. Dr. Solomon is a treasure and I just want to know how I can sign up for that class.

√. Hattie as a main character was brilliant. She is so complex and mature for her age, and Furniss does a great job of making her real. Even though I haven't been in her position (hiding a teenage pregnancy), I felt like I could relate completely to her.√. A thought that stuck with me while I was reading this was how Hattie was such a strong female character without having to be physical fighter. Her strength came from feeling her emotions, feeling scared and being brave enough to hold her head high, empathise with those around her, and carry on.√. Similarly, I really liked Gloria. She completely didn't fit the stereotype of the old lady, sporting garish clothes, heavy makeup and a taste for champagne rather than tea. As with all of the characters in this book, she wasn't two dimensional at all. Every time you thought you knew everything about her, something else was thrown in to enrich either her character or the plot. And all the while, she didn't become the plot of her dementia, which made it even more emotional.√. Despite the characters being so great, it was the message that really did it for me with this book. Like I said earlier, the emphasis isn't on shutting out the world and not being scared, it's about feeling it and being brave because of it. The message wasn't just directed at Hattie either - it was used in relation to the secondary characters too, whether it be Reuben or Hattie's family. I just thought it was great that it wasn't complete tunnel vision on Hattie and that the other characters mattered too.√. No preaching. That is a major positive of this book. The topic of abortion and adoption is discussed and considered by Hattie but it never sounds like the author wants you to take a particular standpoint on whether you should agree or disagree with it. I am pro choice (with conditions) but never felt like my opinion was portrayed as being wrong or right. In that way, I think this book can be for everyone, no matter what your views are.√. The writing and the characters in this book make it seem like it is beyond YA, really. I noticed a few other reviewers have said this and I completely agree that Hattie's maturity and darker subject matters are more New Adult. It can be a positive or a negative depending on your comfort zone but if you don't feel ready to branch out from YA, this could be a great transitional book. Give it a try!✘. There are flashbacks to the fifties and sixties in this book when exploring Gloria's past, and those include racist language and domestic abuse. Just a heads up if you are sensitive to that kind of language. If it upsets you, you might want to give this one a miss.This book is so under-appreciated! It was really great!
