This is a good manual to use in avoiding the pitfalls of writing science fiction. It gave good technical information about science, tips on the natural progression of technology, human exploration and scientific research. I will use it as a good reference book on the subject. The only problem that I had was that it needs updating. I understand that even with an updated copy, the information will be outdated by the time it is published but that is the reason I gave it 4 stars.

this book is easy to read, and covers so many things necessary for the beginning or experienced writer. i can't think of any other book that covers so many different aspects of science fiction as this one does.

I'd pay good money for an up to date version of this! Fascinating read in and of itself, but also a really good grounding on various sciencey things, written in a way that's interesting and accessible.

Seems too standardized--not very insightful.

If you are writing a book this is very helpful.

Getting a little old. Not all infor is correct as new infor is discovered everyday.

Fun read, besides offering helpful ideas.

This is not a 'how to write science fiction' book. It is an informative yet easy to read and understand reference guide. The author makes sure to point out 'common mistakes' in science fiction and gives good ideas on how to avoid them.

Amazon.com Review

Setting: Regency England Sensuality: 8 Governess Honoria Wetherby is determined not to marry; she plans to have adventures among the Egyptian pyramids in lieu of wedding a controlling husband. But even the best-laid plans can run afoul of luck and outrageous fortune, as is fatefully proven one stormy evening when Honoria happens upon a dying young man in the woods. After passing the night in a cottage alone with the corpse and his cousin, the rakish and very much alive Devil Cynster, it's decided--by the handsome rake--that Honoria has been compromised by the unchaperoned evening and the only remedy is to marry. Despite her flat refusal, Devil is determined to have the beautiful and feisty governess; his family is overjoyed that he's finally planning to marry. But Devil definitely has his work cut out for him as he attempts to convince Honoria to wed him and forego her plans for adventure. Luring Honoria to the altar is further complicated when she insists upon aiding him in the search for his cousin's killer. Which will Devil accomplish first: seducing Honoria or unveiling a murderer? Or will Honoria foil the first plan and solve the second before Devil can? Devil's Bride is the first of several novels by Laurens that feature the members of the noble Cynster family in Regency England. The larger-than-life hero is bold, brave, daring, and determined and meets his perfect match in the heroine, who is plucky, intelligent, practical, and wise. Lush sensuality, deft plotting, and charming secondary characters make this novel a stellar beginning for the Bar Cynster series. --Lois Faye Dyer

As a known devourer of historical romance, it's surprising I've delayed on reading Cynster Book One for so long since I've heard rave reviews for about ten years. I am adamant about reading series books in a row and I believe I read the back cover description several times and decided The Devil's Bride is not for me. I avoid governess-themed historical romances like the plague... it's just about my least favorite trope next to mistress stories. After a sad dry spell of disappointing romances I decided to give this book a whirl regardless of my distaste for the governess angle. To my delight, the book cover description was pretty inaccurate. Honoria, our heroine, is only a governess in history, and we are spared the twee moments that I dread as it never becomes a part of the actual story. WHEW! Yeah!So then I got into the swing of the actual story which... to my delight... I loved! Top notch writing with well-researched, non-anachronistic prose, phrases and traditions. A spunky (only slightly annoying heroine) in the form of Honoria and a brooding, possessive, tall-dark-and-handsome duke named Devil. Yes please... I'll even take seconds! My delight in this writing style has decided that I must read the rest of the series. But before we do that we must review The Devil's Bride, and all that she was:Five Star Review:I already expressed my delight in the accurate and beautiful writing, though it alone is worth a solid five stars, regardless of plot… but I digress. Moving onto the actual storyline and characters I would like to focus on the five star material without giving away spoilers.Devil, as our duke, is the perfect possessive, alpha male that arouses my reader’s mind. He is simply a delight – arrogant, gorgeous, haughty, proud and totally obsessed with the heroine. Some of those qualities can be a negative of course… but Devil is ALSO sweet, thoughtful, patient, romantic and a good listener. He has a temper but he communicates. Thank goodness this allows no “big misunderstanding” to pollute the plotline. I found Devil to be nearly perfect as a hero… as he is rational with his possessiveness and he is so very adoring of the heroine. There were parts in this story I nearly cheered at, as it’s been so long since I read a book in which the hero and heroine actually talk and learn about each other and, for goodness sakes, listen and trust without jumping to conclusions. There were at least three parts I read several times over, I enjoyed them so much. That’s rare… so automatically the author got added to my read list. I try not to spoil such pleasures, but I will mention the word waltz… while I swoon. I was also pretty darn charmed with the entire intro of this story… and I couldn’t hold back my laughter during plenty of scenes.Great side characters, a delicious brooding six pack of gorgeous men (looking forward to all of their stories – the glimpses I got in this one were just stunning) and delightful settings made this one quite captivating. The beginning of this novel, say the first hundred pages, was pretty spectacular. The last one hundred pages were too. Once our heroine decides she will return the love of the hero, things get really exciting and the story returns back to its origins… a light murder mystery type plotline which improves things. Two Star Review:Our heroine Honoria is definitely slightly annoying. She holds to her guns with the I-will-never-marry trope just about three beats too long. Just when it becomes utterly ridiculous, the author finally allows the heroine to “give in” to our adoring duke. Unfortunately, it’s rather sudden and a little silly. Continuing on with the heroine as a two star character, she is rather daft at times – too bullheaded and stubborn for my liking. I really can’t stand a heroine who gets herself into mortal danger to make a point that she’s intelligent… it’s of course the opposite of intelligent to get oneself into scrapes that could cost yourself your own life or the life of someone you love. Fortunately, this two star stuff is not nearly as bad as some books I’ve read in which this character type destroys the story and the romance. Honoria has a lot of good qualities and moments in which she gets to redeem herself and she won me over every time she made me angry. So I forgave her time and time again… much like Devil did. She also does have a couple great moments in which to shine. The middle hundred pages of this novel slow down a great deal and got a little sluggish to get through. I can’t really stomach a back and forth like Honoria and Devil began to endure. You will marry me! No, I won’t! But luckily that doesn’t last TOO long. A couple more pages of that, however, and this would have dipped into the wall banger category. Whew!Neutral:The light murder mystery is fairly lame. Mostly it’s just pretty darn obvious who the murderer is and WHY he is murdering. I didn’t mind this so much as it was told well and written well and the dialogue surrounding the murder mystery plot is actually believable. So it equals out to a neutral gray area… it’s not bad but not that great either. The story does indeed HAVE a plot besides the two star nonsense, so there you go.And in the end:Overall this is a solid four star, maybe 3.8 star. The writing is spectacular and accurate, two things I search for without much success when perusing historical romances. The author knows how to deliver a spectacular hero and she can cultivate excellent chemistry between the two main characters. Though the plotline in this one was loose, I could tell it was thoughtful and organized. I am hoping for the same quality of writing in future books…. Maybe a more fluid plot that carries more evenly. Most authors try out different types of heroines, so I’m hoping our next gal is a little less willful. Overall this was a solid read with a few parts (no spoilers, sorry) that were just exceptional and so worth every page. The good parts were very, very, very good! I’m going back for more… I just downloaded Vane and Patience’s book. On to number two!You will like this book if:You like possessive, alpha heroes. Light, vanilla suspense as a backdrop. Stubborn heroine resists marriage. Independent heroine with life plan changes course for love. Large loving family. Wounded heroine.

This is the first Stephanie Laurens book that I read. I got frustrated reading this book. She described everything in painstaking detail. I ended up skimming a lot of the book for this reason. The first person point of view changing from paragraph to paragraph was distracting. The heroine was super annoying with an inflated sense of self importance. She doesn’t want to marry Devil, but she believes that she’s entitled to help solve his murder? Eye roll....I might have been mire sympathetic to her if I knew why she won’t marry him earlier than was stated. And....she doesn’t want to marry him but then got mad at him when he didn’t pay enough attention to her? Another eye roll...I could go on and on with examples of how obnoxious and annoying she was through the novel. And the whole “I won’t marry you/You’re going to marry me” thing got really old. Almost the entire first half of the book is exclusively this interaction between Honoria and Devil. Nothing else happened except a small, little murder that wasn’t really focused on. Another eye roll....I didn’t finish reading the book. I just couldn’t do it.

This book is the reason I returned to the historical romance genre after a decades long hiatus. Beginning with Devil's Bride, the Cynster series sets the gold standard for utterly captivating regency romance. Devil's Bride is exceptional with a well developed plot in keeping with the time period, multidimensional characters that possess strength and emotion, action and adventure, a taste of mystery and suspense, a hot sizzling romance and a funny intimidating demon horse to boot. I loved this story and would rate it 10 stars if possible!

This is my favourite Cynster Novel. I love how Devil and the other Cynster males pop up in all the other stories. Devil's Bride is the first book in an amazing saga. Devil is the alpha, the leader of the Bar Cynster, a group of men, all related, who play hard. Their belief that no woman will ever bring them to their knees is blown out of the water, when one by one, they fall. The other five are stunned, when their leader, Devil, announces he intent to marry after unintentionally compromising a beautiful young woman. Devil's prospective Duchess, however, has no plans to marry, or be ruled by any man, especially a man known as Devil. A battle of the wills ensures. Danger, mayhem, and frustration for one particular male. How the mighty fall. It's a fun and exciting read.

#189,817 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I found it difficult to rate this book, wavering between 3 and 4 stars. Eventually, I opted for 4 stars because the book covers many interesting points and, in the opinion of this layperson, the author's arguments seem sound and persuasive. On the other hand, it is more obscure than necessary due to the author's long-winding linguistic style interspersed with numerous analogies/metaphors, some of which more puzzling than revealing (the way I look at it, of course) and, contrary to the description in the Preface to the book, some background in physics is required so as to appreciate the author's arguments. Besides, this book does not explain well (if at all) the concept of objective (physical) time and I feel it fails to give the non-professional reader a clear idea how to view the things from an atemporal standpoint (or 'view from nowhen').And so, my first try at this book was a total fiasco due to the lack of a clear idea of the concepts of objective (physical) time, entropy, thermodynamical processes, causal forks, a state function,... (the full list of things would be too long). All my thanks for acquiring the required knowledge for understanding this book properly during my second try go to Records of the Future - Classical Entropy, Memory, and the 'Arrow of Time' (Quantum Physics free of Folklore #1) and Galloping with Light - Einstein, Relativity, and Folklore. The main idea of Time's Arrow and Archimedes' Point is that our intuitive/subjective sense of time has a very great effect on how we think about time and the temporal aspects of reality. Namely, we should try to distinguish how the world actually is from how it seems to be from our particular standpoint. Mr. Price argues that the concept of 'time' is a secondary quality such as colour, leaving it to the reader to figure out for herself/himself what the primary quality in the case of 'time' might be. (As my inference was influenced by Records of the Future - Classical Entropy, Memory, and the 'Arrow of Time' (Quantum Physics free of Folklore #1), I'll keep silent on this point so as not to spoil the fun of trying to find it out for yourself.)One of the central questions of the book is how it is possible to reconcile the time-symmetric laws we find in physics with the world we find around us, which appears to have a preferred direction from past to future. In efforts to reach the answer to this question, the first half of the book deals with the categories/phenomena (the so-called 'arrows of time') on which our subjective sense of time relies: the arrow of thermodynamics, the arrow of radiation, the cosmological arrow, the arrow of causation and the arrow of counterfactual dependence. The question now is whether these 'arrows of time' reflect only our anthropocentric view or the real feature of reality. In general, the low-entropy condition of the present and past universe is puzzling and Mr. Price argues that a purely statistical reasoning is unreliable and unsatisfactory because it is in conflict with the prevailing time-symmetric physics and involves unjustified temporal double standards. In this context, Mr. Price expounds his reflections on the basic dilemma of cosmology, which I found interesting. It seems that we have to accept either Gold's hypothesis that entropy must decrease toward both ends of the Universe, or Penrose's that the low-entropy big bang is simply not explicable by time-symmetric physics unless we were prepared to allow it is just a statistical 'fluke'. The author argues in favor of Thomas Gold's time-symmetric Universe (recollapsing/low entropy at both ends). What I also found very interesting are Mr. Price's reflections on Wheeler-Feynmann Absorber Theory (according to the author, it involves a misleading concept of temporal asymmetry of radiation) and objections to Hawking's assumption that the Universe has an objective start, failing to apply the statistical arguments and the 'no-boundary' (low-entropy) condition equally both to what we call the big-bang and the supposed big-crunch, putting thus asymmetry in his theory 'by hand'.The second half of the book deals with the asymmetry of the principle of μInnocence (common past hypothesis at the microscopic level) and our intuitive view of cause-effect relation. Mr. Price proposes that causal asymmetry might be perspective dependent. What gives us the `causal temporal arrow' is the fact that it is impossible for us, as agents in the world, to reverse the order of things, i.e., to achieve an earlier end(effect) by a later means (cause). We take it for granted that events in the world are independent unless they share some common causal history. In Mr. Price's opinion, QM seems to provide a confirmation against the asymmetry of the principle of μInnocence because it is actually not observable but only reflects our macroscopic view of cause-effect relation. However, a consequence of abandoning μInnocence is surprising. Mr. Price favors Einstein's view of QM, arguing that the asymmetry of the state function is unproblematic if it is simply an incomplete description of QM. He suspects that Bell thought both the common past hypothesis and the common future hypothesis conflict with our intuitive assumption that experimenters are free to choose measurement settings and that these settings are free variables. Mr. Price thinks "it is fair to say that Bell saw how Einstein could be right about QM, but didn't understand what he saw".Mr. Price further proposes we might give up Bell's independence assumption and save Einsteinian realism and locality as well as free will. The secret lies in advanced action/backward causation. While the mathematics remains the same, the benefits of the advanced action approach to explain reality at microscopic level are: it avoids nonlocality (faster than light influence can be considered as a backward influence from some inertial frame of reference), denies that a collapse of a wave function corresponds to a real change in the physical system and it does not encounter the measurement problem.Overall, this book is worth your while if you are intrigued with the subject and prepared to do some hard work.

This is a very good book, but I feel that something is missing.Imagine if someone in 1820 had written the definitive book about electricity and magnetism: It would have contained all kinds of information about Leyden jars, dynamos, induced current, electro-magnets, compasses, etc. It would not mention the electro-magnetic field, nor would it mention electro-magnetic radiation. This is not a criticism of the author: No one today could write a complete book on the subject of time, because we still do not really understand itThe author does a good job of covering entropy, causality, and quantum time asymmetry, but I believe that these phenomena are all aspects of the same thing. The scientific and philosophical study of time is still in the stage where we are "collecting stamps", rather like biology was in the period before Darwin. We are still waiting for an integrated theory of time, which can explain the direction of causality, the non-reversibility of radiation, and all of the other time-asymmetries in one package.

In the preface of Time's Arrow and Archimedes' Point, Mr. Price describes his target audience as being those people with an interest in the subject of time, yet no formal education in either Physics or Philosophy. In this light I feel that the book does not fare well due more to its style than its topic. I am wildly interested in the book's subject matter, and I have no formal education in either Physics or Philosophy, yet I found myself struggling at times to appreciate Mr. Price's logic on the first pass. Following the linguistic style of the book was apparently an issue for the editors at Oxford as well because it contained over a half-dozen typographical errors (all contextual; not spelling errors). The ultimate purpose of the book is to make the case for a "Block Universe", one in which time does not flow, but rather whose entire existence already resides as a fourth dimension. "Archimedes' Point" in the title refers to the need for us to step out of our shells as agents in time, and view nature "from nowhen" if we are to truly understand the concept. Mr. Price begins by analyzing what appears to be the natural symmetry of time as outlined by the mathematical description of physics. He then presents common time-asymmetric arguments, one after another, and shows them to be ultimately fallacious, contradictory, or suffering from anthropocentric double standards. Near the end of the book Mr. Price incorporates the strange behavior of quantum mechanics, which can plausibly be explained by advanced action (aka causes coming from the future), to bolster his "Block Universe" claims. In the end I almost take the Block Universe for granted, and from this perspective the book is a resounding success.Making it through the book was ultimately satisfying. The author's arguments, once fully appreciated, are sound and persuasive. The end of each chapter contains a summary of its contents which was fantastic. The final chapter again contains a summary of the major logical points made throughout the book which really helps to bring everything together. If you are a casual reader looking to be entertained then this book is probably not for you. If you are willing to do some work in the quest to expand your knowledge then I would recommend it...

The author is obviously extremely intelligent and well-versed in his areas of expertise. But he seems to have written this book for a limited audience of people like himself rather than a broader group of more average people who are interested in gaining more insight and understanding concerning the question of the nature of time. Unless a person is an expert in physics as well as philosophy, hopefully there are probably books somewhere more accessible than this one. I certainly will be looking for one.

Great Book

A materialistic rendition of reality above my "pay grade" where consciousness is left out in my layman understanding.

Review

Praise for the previous edition: "The new sixth edition of Principles of Biomedical Ethics is a welcome event. There is nothing else like it in the field of bioethics. It has easily become over the years the most used, most praised, and most distinguished book in the field. Each edition moves beyond the previous ones in important and nuanced ways. Beauchamp and Childress keep up with the ever-changing terrain of bioethics, and work hard to refine their own arguments. It gets better and better. One can hardly ask for more."--Daniel Callahan, Director, International Program, The Hastings Center"What is by far the best general book on bioethics has gotten even better. The new material on international justice and virtue ethics is especially valuable. Such a combination of accessibility and rigor is rarely attained."--Allen Buchanan, James B. Duke Professor of Philosophy and James B. Duke Professor of Public Policy Studies, Duke University"This sixth edition of Principles of Biomedical Ethics reaffirms its undisputed stature as a canonical text for the world's bioethicists. It maintains a standard of scholarship and clarity appealing to neophytes and seasoned scholars, to adherents and critics of its principled approach."--Edmund D. Pellegrino, Chairman, President's Council on Bioethics"The contemporary field of bioethics is unimaginable, absent this text. Principles of Biomedical Ethics provided a paradigmatic approach that shaped the early character of bioethics. It continues to be a source of serious debate regarding the nature of morality and the significance of bioethics. No one can understand the field of bioethics apart from this volume."--H. Tristram Engelhardt, Jr., M.D., Professor, Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine"Like all of its previous incarnations, this new edition of Principles of Biomedical Ethics offers the reader a window onto the cutting edge of contemporary bioethics. Never content to merely recycle, buff, and slap new covers on old material, Beauchamp and Childress have once again rethought fundamental issues and fully engaged with their critics (including me). Beyond merely contributing to the field of bioethics, PBE has helped to define it."--John D. Arras, Porterfield Professor of Bioethics, University of Virginia"Every new edition of this classic gets better and better. This is essential reading for all students and scholars of bioethics."--Bernard Lo, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Director, Program in Medical Ethics, University of California, San Francisco"Principles of Biomedical Ethics has, over six successive editions, clarified and expanded the concepts, definitions, and arguments that make bioethics a discipline instead of random shards of opinion, sometimes astute, sometimes silly, that pass in the media for ethical commentary on medicine and science. This book is the thesaurus of bioethical discourse."--Albert R. Jonsen, Professor Emeritus, Department of Medical History and Ethics, University of Washington"The sixth edition of Principles of Biomedical Ethics, which more than any other book has helped to shape the field of biomedical ethics, is even better than the previous five editions. Beauchamp and Childress continue to listen to their critics, of whom I am one, and to change their book accordingly. Although I still have some problems with the theory of principlism, I have nothing but admiration for their comprehensive and detailed discussion of the moral problems that arise in the field of medicine."--Bernard Gert, Stone Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, Dartmouth College"Anyone with an interest in the field, including all those who have already been influenced by previous editions of Principles of Biomedical Ethics--and who in our field hasn't been, directly or indirectly?--should read the sixth edition. They will find the by-now familiar principles treated in new ways and, more importantly, thoughtful examinations of global health and of the relationship of vulnerability and exploitation to the often-neglected principle of justice. This book is now essential reading not only for those who grapple with clinical dilemmas and the challenges of biomedical research but also for anyone working on the frontiers of public health, where global epidemics and routine surveillance raise some of the most difficult issues in bioethics."--Alexander M. Capron, University Professor, University of Southern California, and Former Director, Ethics, Trade, Human Rights and Health Law, World Health Organization

I LOVED this book! I took it for a Medical Ethics course and really loved it! It is a quick, easy read that clearly articulates many of the basic dilemmas we face in both psychology, social work, and the medical field. It is laid out to help you critically think about ethics, and how challenging medical ethics can be. I am not ashamed to admit that it opened my mind and has helped me to better discuss problems surrounding ethics, even within the lay community.

It is all researchers need to learn about ethics in research

Dry but very informative

Excellent

Good introduction to a complex and evolving field.

THIS BOOK IS BAD. IT IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. WE TOOK IT TO DC WITH US AND IT WAS TERRIBLY USELESS. THERE WERE NO PICS, NO MAPS, NOT EVEN A SUBWAY MAP. RECOMMENDATIONS WERE OUT OF DATE AND SAD. EASTERN MARKET WAS WORSSE THAN A BACKYARD GARAGE SALE. YELP WAS MORE USEFUL AND FREE. THIS WAS MY FIRST AND LAST FROMMERS GUIDE. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR PUTTING OUT A BOOK DISGUISED AS A GUIDE. IT MOST CERTAINLY IS not not not NOT a guide. you will be happy if this helps and you do not buy. Please find something else. the few of us who wasted our money is enough.

I just got back from D.C. after using this guide. I constantly looked through this book for ideas/suggestions on where to go and what to do. Comments on the museums (open/close times, etc) was extremely helpful. However, I wish the book had more info on wheelchair accessibility for each museum. I would suggest to Frommers that a little wheelchair accessible icon be located somewhere at the beginning or end of each museum/restaurant that is mentioned.

I bought the Kindle edition of this book just to see what it would be like, and I knew I would be getting other guide books for Washington DC. I had read some reviews of an earlier Kindle edition that said the guidebook didn't work well in this format, which is true to a point. If you are only buying one, get a paper book. But if you plan to get several, and you read this one on Kindle for PC like I did, you won't be disappointed by the information presented. One neat thing about this edition is that the table of contents gives chapter headings, as well as sections within the chapters that give a very good idea of what you can find there. Navigation to those parts of the book is as easy as a click. You can also bookmark pages you want to come back to. The bad--flipping from an entry for a hotel or restaurant or whatever to the map of where you can find it is not as easy as with a book. The other low point is that you don't get the pullout map provided with the paper book.******Amazon would do a lot better with these books on Kindle (especially when you can read them on a device like the Samsung Galaxy Tab) if it was possible to zoom in on maps and pictures. As far as content goes, this books offers more of a historical overview than some, less than others. The entries for attractions, hotels, and restaurants may have special icons for great value, great find, good for kids, and several others. This is great information to have.Where this book shines is in presenting information on various modes of public transportation, whereas some of the others just gloss over everything but the Metro. When we take our trip, I'm going to put this book on the Tab for easy reference, not to mention not having to carry around all that paper.

Every time I travel I get a travel guide several months before and prepare for the trip. This one had lots of great info and was a very big help to me in making the most of this wonderful trip to DC.

This book has great color pictures, and great information including how many days (or months) in advance that you need to order tickets for various tours like the White House and the Capitol. It's an incredibly valuable tool for planning a trip to Washington DC. Each place to visit includes a website and telephone number as contact information and what Metro lines to take. The accomodation and dining sections are great too.

EXCELLENT! We found reasonable places to dine and to stay. Frommer's suggestions are the best. I'd recommend Frommer's to anyone who travels whether to Washington or to another city.

Frommer books always introduce me to places and history I knew nothing about. And they're very practical for finding a place to stay or eat. I almost always agree their assessment of a site.

This book was very helpful in planning our vacation, and the enclosed map that came with it was an absolute necessity. It showed all of the museums, monuments and points of interest we wanted to visit. It also noted the name of the nearest Metro stop and the color of train to take. Extremely useful and highly recommend. Seller was great, fast and easy. Book was in condition that was promised.
