As we begin our seventh decade, my wife has discovered hiking trips as an adjunct to workouts at the gym. Woe is me; I'd rather just sit in a café patio under the trees and read a book. Is this the worse part of "for better or worse"?Lizann Dunegan's BEST EASY DAY HIKES: PORTLAND, OREGON (a.k.a. BEDH below) accompanied us on a long weekend getaway to Portland last August. It's a nifty little volume, and its relatively small format makes it amenable to inclusion in either the airplane carry-on or trail backpack, although that same diminutive size renders the maps somewhat problematic to those with failing eyesight. Perhaps one of those magnifying bookmarkers might prove useful (UltraOptix Handi-Lens Magnifier Bookmark).The volume describes twenty-eight hikes in and around Portland and off to the east along the south bank of the Columbia River Gorge. The longest is that looping around Hagg Lake (14.1 miles) and the shortest the roundtrip to and from Sherrard Point on Larch Mountain (0.5 mile).The book begins with an Introduction, which includes Weather, Clothing, Shoes and Socks, Backpacks, Day Hiking Checklist, Trail Regulations/Restrictions, Trail Contacts, and Zero Impact. The last item simply means not stripping the environment of interesting artifacts and not discarding your energy bar wrappers and plastic water bottles along the path.Each of "The Hikes" is comprised of Highlights, Distance, Approximate Hiking Time, Elevation Gain, Permits and Fees, Restrictions, Canine Compatibility, Maps (sources), Finding the Trailhead, The Hike (summary description), and Miles and Directions. The section for each hike is 3 to 5 pages long including map. There's no mention of "feline compatibility" if you want to take Fluffy.So, you may ask, how was the guide when it came to crunch time, i.e. putting boots on the ground?The hike we chose to trudge was the 6-mile roundtrip to the Warrior Rock Lighthouse (Hike #8) at the north end of Sauvie Island in the Columbia River. (Of course, this was after spending 90 minutes working out at the YMCA in Vancouver, WA. See what I have to put up with?!)The trailhead is about 25 road miles northwest of the Portland city center. The directions in BEDH proved to be clear, concise, and right on. After crossing over to the island and purchasing the day permit at Sam's Cracker Barrel Store, we drove the last 15.5 miles to the trailhead through pleasant rural countryside. It being the season, there were several farms displaying a "Pick Your Own Blueberries!" sign. As the BEDH indicates, the last two miles of the road and the parking lot at the trailhead are gravel surfaced. The only untoward incident occurred when we almost lost the permit down the crack between the front windshield and the dashboard. Lucky for us my wife has fingers smaller and nails longer than mine.Arriving at the trailhead, we studied the first Mile and Directions entry:"0.0 Start hiking north on the singletrack trail located next to a wood trail sign adjacent to the parking area. (Note: this section of the route can be wild and overgrown.)"Wild and overgrown? Gee, no kidding! What the book doesn't mention is that the overgrowth is almost all prickly blackberry bushes. If you insist on forcing your way through the vegetation, you'll likely come out the other side with clothes and exposed skin shredded as if attacked by a pride of Fluffies. So, since the parking lot also serves a beach, we elected almost immediately to forsake the trail and walk the sand the three miles to the lighthouse. This alternative route wouldn't have been possible in some places had the Columbia not been affected by the low tide condition in the Pacific Ocean miles away. (The receded waters also exposed many small clams to death from desiccation or predatory birds, so my wife spent an unreasonable amount of time rescuing them by tossing them back into the river. This perhaps doubled the time spent on the outward bound leg.) The low tide route along the beach is eminently serviceable except for the last few hundred feet when one must either adroitly pick a way over an ankle-twisting pile of rocks constructed as a breakwater to buttress the island's pointy end and lighthouse, or find a way up an overgrown embankment and into the woods to that interior path forsaken by us back at the parking lot.Along the way on the beach, we passed a cheery beach bum ensconced in a lawn chair and keeping an eye on two kites he'd launched into the breeze. Further on, the wreck of an old wooden vessel embedded in the shore provided a photo op. I'm not sure which was more derelict, the bum or the boat.Finally arriving at Warrior Rock Lighthouse (est. 1889), the local population of freshwater clams saved from extinction, we stopped long enough to eat a picnic lunch topped off with handfuls of ripe blackberries, which were also in-season. We elected to try and return as far as possible on the inland path, but had to abandon it yet again for the beach about a third of the way back because of the rampant undergrowth. Perhaps this was just as well as it was less breezy in the woods making biting insects peskier.The bum was still tending his kites. Perhaps he should be made a permanent part of the BEDH narrative.Back at the car park, my wife collected several cups of blackberries from the bushes bordering the lot, and which she enjoyed with yogurt over the remainder of our stay. For her, this was, I suspect, the highlight of the weekend. She loves fruit, especially when it's free versus $3 a basket back home.I should further mention that, during the time we were in Portland, the weather was the hottest it'd been all summer - over 100 degrees. So, even if you're walking along the river on level ground, take plenty of drinking water!Because of our inability to stay on the trail and therefore verify the particulars of the route described in BEDH, I cannot award 5 stars. However, Hike #8 seems otherwise accurately presented.(Note 1: If you walk south two miles along the sand from the trailhead parking lot instead of north to Warrior Rock, you'll pass through a clothing-optional beach. Just in case you're interested.)(Note 2: I emailed the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which is responsible for maintaining the trail through the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area to Warrior Rock, to casually mention the overgrown condition of the trail and wonder how my $3.50 permit fee was being spent. Of course, I didn't receive the courtesy of a reply.)

We used this book extensively during our recent trip to Portland and took 9 of the hikes. There were hikes in the city itself as well as hikes that could be done on day trips. The book fit into the pocket of my husband's cargo shorts, so it was easy to bring along on the hikes. Information and locations seemed accurate. Highly recommended!

very good information, I have done 5 of the 30 hikes in the book and they have been spot on with the details of the trails. the only con that I see is they give information to other map books and the information needs to be updated to the latest rev on the other maps, as the page numbers don't match up anymore.

We have several of these best day hike guides...They are excellent for short trips to a area...they pick out some of the best hikes that are easy to access...descriptions and directions are useful....as with anything its not one size fits all...some of the hikes will be too short for us... but often it brings us to a place with other hikes that are just what we wanted...is great for pointing you in the right direction and the book is small and light so it gets taken...

As a frequent summer visitor to the Rose City, I took this book along this year as a new volume in my collection of Portland walking/hiking guides. In addition to the terrific access the Portland public transit system provides for city walking adventures, for those who also have access to a car and want to do some day hiking outside of the city, I highly recommend this wonderful little volume. Brief descriptions of each hike give a good sense of what to expect, and clear directions along with easy to read and small, but accurate, maps provide sufficient detail for a satisfying experience on the trail. Many of the hikes are actually within the city of Portland, but several splendid local and state parks to the east, south and west of the city are included. The book is small enough (7" x 4 1/4") to fit easily into most hiking packs/bags or even large pockets. A very useful guide for any hiker wanting to sample the wide variety of easy Portland area trails!

I've used this several times to go out with my hiking friend. I love the details it gives but wish it would rate the hike, if it has inclines or just flat to help me plan for them.

Composed by Padma Sambhava in the late eighth century, this text minutely describes the "betweens" ( Bardos ) or after-death transition states. Thurman, who opens this work with a new section of preliminary prayers, gives a helpful commentary in terms Westerners can understand and boldface portions to be read aloud in the presence of the dead. He closes by appending Nyingma tradition works to the main text. This text has already been translated in 1927 and 1975, and some of Thurman's new translation choices are questionable. For instance, the West has adopted the term karma , which expresses the original meaning better than evolution --an alternative that obscures the personal responsibility emphasized in Buddhism. In addition, since Tibetan pronouns are sexually neutral, alternating his with her from verse to verse confuses. Still, Westerners will find this a colorful, awesome journey. Let me state this for the sake of clarity: in terms to profundity, this book is, in my opinion, unparalleled.We, here in the west, assume that we are among the most advanced nation(s) on the planet; that materialism, capitalism, even religious thought - are the acme of civilization. Then there's this book.I have been a voracious reader all my life, and have been exposed to thousands of pages of literature from countless brilliant minds; my advice to those of my ilk: read this book and be amazed at the complexity of it. Read the foreword by the Dalai Lama; you will come away shaking your head. The philosophy expressed by His Holiness is akin to one perfect thought honoring a process of liberation of the soul.And this: you would be in error to classify this book as religious; Buddhism? Buddhism is Science of Mind.

Good, common sense approach to international business. Pretty basic but still worthwhile read.

very useful fir ny studies

This basic, solid book on global business takes nothing for granted. Author Ernest Gundling teaches by example and illustration, and has something approaching a horror of direct statement. At the end of each chapter, where a bolder writer might insert points to remember, he provides, instead, lists of questions to consider. This book will tell you the skills you need and will make you very aware of your deficits, but it will not tell you precisely how to develop those skills. Gundling does provide a wealth of little, fictitious anecdotes about people who have done the right or wrong thing in global business. In a refreshingly humble approach, he sometimes uses his own blunders as examples of what not to do. We recommend his book, which brings to mind that Socrates was judged the wisest of men because he knew he knew nothing. Readers will come a few steps closer to such Socratic enlightenment. What you may not know about conducting yourself in international business would fill a book - this one.

This book clarifies common pitfalls in interacting with foreign counterparts and offers solutions structured around twelve people skills: establishing credibility; giving and receiving feedback; obtaining information; evaluating people; building global teamwork; training and development; selling; negotiating; strategic planning; transferring knowledge; innovating; and managing change. This is how he fought to be a good father, a successful entrepreneur, continue to engage his talent as a musician, and most of all, be a happy person, and how none of that came easy.I was overjoyed to read about his journey back to KoRn, and the way he can look at his absence not as God taking him away, but as God preparing him to go back. It’s very touching to read the stories of him praying with fans alongside his band mate and brother through Christ, Fieldy. Of course ignorant fans would mock them; it can be overwhelming for those who don’t know to stand in the presence of the Lord.I appreciate the candor he brings to this book, and that he has retained his humor. He shared some deeply personal stories about financial mishaps and near ruin. The challenges of being a single father to his daughter were heart wrenching, but I couldn’t help but find myself thinking how lucky she is to have a father who won’t give up on her, or their relationship.His Faith is a driving force for him that he is eager and unashamed to share. Be you Christian or not, reading about his life so far, his ability to fall, to persevere, and to rise again, is admirable.As for me, I have learned that Brian didn’t have one reason to walk away from a ‘rock star’ life...he had a million. And why he came back was backed by a force far greater than money, fame, and possessions. I love to see life come full circle.

I became a Christian and still messed up my life. I broke many relationships and walked away from God (without admitting it to others or myself). This book is starting to spring hope that God might still care about me. I am worried that he will not accept me as I am now, since I should have known better. A ray of hope is in my heart that He still wants to be with me, and is willing to clean me. Thank you so much for being so messed up, and sharing how much you are loved by God in honesty. I once cursed God too and tore up a bible. It was so encouraging to know that I'm not the only one, and that Gods love is big enough to not only forgive me for my sin, but still wants to grow closer.

With My Eyes Wide Open is Welch’s second book that he has written. In the book, he describes a whole course of decisions dating back to his decision to leave Korn in 2005. From this point on, he describes his life fathering his daughter Jennea, starting his own solo career, finding the light of god, battling depression, drug abuses, starting his own label company, going bankrupt, etc. Welch’s journey that he describes to us is incredibly realistic and dark. It is almost unthinkable to any Korn fan that the same guitarist behind the multi-platinum album Follow the Leader and Issues would not only quit the band, but run into financial problems of all things, as well as caring for his daughter and struggling to even start his own music career. Much like Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis, as well as many of their fans, Welch faces mental health issues and consistently struggles to come to terms with his life, unsurprising given that Korn has touched on the topic religiously in the past, and fans of their music often have some sort of reason to relate to it. In the book, Welch describes an unthinkable amount of hardship and struggle not only with his own life, but with his daughters as well. His only daughter, Jennea, has yet to meet her mother in her entire life, and she had begun to cut herself at the age of 14. Welch gives a very accurate and heartbreaking description of finding out that Jennea was cutting herself. In addition, he gives off a similar tone when describing the process of dropping off her daughter at a specialist hospital that deals with mental health issues. Welch does not take emphasis off his struggles in this book, and even having a second writer almost makes it seem like he wrote the entire book on his laptop while sipping coffee in the airport, waiting for his flight to arrive so he can go home. Overall, the book gives off an incredible string of emotion, much like any Korn song. Welch’s problems are ever present, however he choses to use it in a way that encourages readers to hold on and pull through the struggles of their own problems. Writing and vocabulary is very strong, and this book will not disappoint anyone who is familiar with Welch or his band Korn.

Brian’s book ‘Save Me From Myself’ was so amazing I bought this one the second after I was done reading it. ‘With My Eyes Wise Open’ is a continuation of the story of his life’s journey with Jesus. Equally amazing as his first book I read, he shares his journey of hardships and trials, and of the pain of seeing his own child go through rough times. He writes with such a fantastic sense of humor that it’s hard not to pee your pants laughing even during sad stories of a beloved decomposing hamster. Though I’m already a Christian, both of his books I read have challenged me to be the best person I can be, and have reminded me of the beautiful unfailing love Jesus has towards me. Perfect for Christians as a reminder of Gods true nature and love towards us, and also perfect for NonChristians who want true answers about who Jesus is without seeming too preachy/overbearingly religious. This book has definitely changed my life. Thanks Brian for writing!
