Great first book in a western series by a talented author. After Ben Stillman is injured by a stray shot, he slides into the bottle and loses his US Marshal's job. The son of an old friend reports his dad killed by rustlers and begs for help. Ben turns him down, but the request forced him to sober up and visit the son's ranch a week later. The story describes the country, the horses, and the characters with moving detail.
I enjoyed this book. It kept me in suspense through out the whole book. Good combination of .mystery and western
Great read with good characters and plenty of action. Bought and read the second in series as well and pre ordered the 3rd book out next week. Well worth the time and money. FYI there are a number of edit issues that need to be corrected ..but if you can get past them and just enjoy the story you will have a good time in saddle.
This is my first book by Peter Brandvold, it will not be my last. I usually read Western Romances but when I saw this book as a recommendation on amazon it pricked my interest. The action was non-stop and the villians Mr Hobbs and Weed Cole gave a new meaning to murdering psychopaths. I like how Marshall Stillman was writen as a real character with strengths and weaknesses. It took him some time to get back into the rythm of being a lawman, I felt his aches and pains and could relate to his ordeal of getting back in shape after letting himself get soft from his premature retirement. Everything about this book felt authentic to the time and place especially the western dialouge. I have only 2 complaints...1. The book was not long enough and 2. The romantic encounters needed more work, they were not bad they just needed a little more meat to them. If you always read these types of Westerns you will love this book.
Did not like this book. I guess I have read to many of C J Petti's books. But I like a tough hero not someone who has several chances to take out the bad guys and blows it. Will not read any more of this author.
Well written with a story that is an all to familiar. Yes, it's the big ranch owner wanting more land and he hires nogooders to do some dirty work. Still, it's a western that I enjoyed.
I am not a Western Story reader, in fact this was my first book in the genre. (I ordered the book as a curiosity after hearing about it from someone who knows Brandvold.)What an entertaining surprise! Brandvold's opener got my blood pumping and drew me into the lives of his characters almost instantly. His highly descriptive writing brought me so close to the settings and the people that I could actually smell the whiskey and feel the passion.Thank you Mr.Brandvold for a very satisfying read and a wonderful introduction to Westerns.
very predictable, and I could never identify with the main character at all. He is kind of a putz.
