Charles Mulli is a man with a mission and with a vision. Understanding what it is to grow up with nothing and then through hard work to create a successful life for himself and his family, he has chosen to help the helpless, to devote his life to rescuing children from the streets of Kenya's cities. After reading "Father to the Fatherless" we can understand what an impact one person can have who chooses the unfailing riches in heaven over temporal wealth on this earth. To have over 700 children calling you "Father", now that is amazing! Mulli's story is told in a captivating way, and I'm sure will be an inspiration and challenge to all readers of this book.

I watched Mully the movie and then read the book. It's a rare, inspiring story and one I highly recommend.

I am not finished with this book (122 pages), but already it strikes me as a important retelling/analysis of a significant period of American history. Probably many who followed the events and personalities more closely than I are familiar with this period, but I was a college student in 1968, working three jobs to stay in school and not participating in anti war protests except the one between my career Army father and myself. My college was a relatively small one in Northern California whose protesting never approached the intensity or scope of Berkeley or Kent State. Nevertheless, many of the characters that Mr. O’Donnell brings into his book were familiar to me, especially the Kennedys. I will never forget my father’s grief over JFK. The book’s presentation of the major players and events of that time period are helping me understand the turmoil and pain the country went through. I proudly admit to being a fan of “The Last Word,” so I was primed to like the book. What I was not prepared for is the way that the narrative is pulling me back into that time. I am viewing now what I missed or didn’t understand In 1968. It is painful, sometimes shocking, completely engrossing. I’m not sorry I wasn’t at Berkeley or any of the other campuses that saw the intense protests: I wouldn’t have met my husband of almost fifty years, for one thing. I wish I could do justice to the book with an erudite review that would inspire you to read it. It needs to be read by anyone who lived through it and by anyone who wants to understand the America that emerged from it. I look forward to finishing it and rereading it.PS. I finished the book without much pausing and remain haunted by the narrative, partly because of the disturbing events of the current political scene. I really try not to watch and listen as American values are denigrated. I turn to accounts of the Revolutionary War and the stories of people who sacrificed so much to create this great nation. I study the Declaration of Independence closely, marveling at the courage and audacity of those men signed it and fought for it. I am briefly comforted.

Gripping. Transformative. Powerful.It's not easy to describe the book that I just put down.The 45th Presidential election made it feel like normalcy was crumbling and everything was shifting--and rightly so. But what remained as a creeping, underlying terror was the uncertainty of it all. Most people thought: we have never been here before--never so divided nor had we ever had a campaign so full of animosity, slander and political powerplayers.Lawrence O'Donnell burned that naivete to the core with a--as another reviewer put it--hot lava flow of information. That really is the best way to describe the pace and searing intensity with which you're pummeled by the gory, juicy political history O'Donnell presents. Every chapter is concise, factual, poignant, and every chapter's end will also leave the reader with goose bumps--either out of sorrow, intrigue, or epiphany.But, the biggest takeaway from Playing with Fire, is that, yes America, we have been here before, and we most definitely can come back from the brink. In a way, this book is almost like a love poem to the LBJ and Nixonian presidencies because without them and the philosophical/political revolution that the Vietnam war spurred, we would far more likely be worse off. And in my eyes, I found the ending to McCarthy's Senate chapters one of the most dramatic. Where would be today, and how many more losses would we have suffered if McCarthy never stormed out of those chambers that day, scowling, and announcing his off-the-record his presidential bid to a NYT reporter?When reading about Vietnam in Playing with Fire, and O'Donnell's synopsis of the information provided in the Pentagon Papers, I learned many things I had never known(or maybe learned in school but forgot). There's also a very well written scene in which O'Donnell shows AG Katzenbach as a master manipulator flipping Congress on its skull after exposing LBJ's sleight-of-hand in his Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that gave the then-president, essentially, unlimited war power in SEA. It's from the McCarthy chapter, and reads like you're watching a taut, political thriller.If you're a fan of The Last Word, you'll be an even bigger fan of this book. Put aside how extraordinary the author is to write this now. I'm going to call it a collective memoir. His story is our story, how Nixon pushed through. I can't put it down. My late husband knew and sparred wth Haldeman and Ehrlichman at UCLA and LBJs nephew, Rod was a close friend. Other friends were extraordinary survivors of the Vietnam war, whose tales would turn you to stone. I am moved by O'Donnell's unfolding of the time and it's relavance to our narrow today. His brilliant Playing with Fire is a hot lava flow of the past that is still rolling into the present. It's a remarkable sucker punch of history -- a bracing reminder that 1968 was a devastating year. His writing is poetic in its charity.

I was in college in 1968 and remember many of the events described in detail in this book. I attended a McCarthy rally, shook RFK's hand when he visited my town in New Jersey and stood at the railroad tracks as his funeral train went through the same town. I remember where I was when MLK and RFK were killed and listening to the news about the urban rioting that followed. I also remember the Democratic convention in Chicago and the presidential election that saw Nixon win the Oval Office. But, what this book did so well was to fill in the back story and gaps of my understanding of those events with the details of the political dealings and behind-the-scenes events that made the 1968 election process the last one of its kind and forever changed the political atmosphere of this country. I highly recommend this book to everyone who has a memory of 1968 and, more importantly, for those too young to remember. This is both a detailed history and a cautionary tale that shows the ugly underbelly of our political system while highlighting some of the people who were the heroes of that era.

This book is of (very) limited usefulness to most of its intended audience, unless the reader has a good solid working knowledge of the knots in each of the projects and how to tie them easily. Quite small in size, the book is quite simply a book of rope projects only without any step-by-step instructions as to how to tie the required knots. Apparently the author assumes that that the end user has a long involved repertoire of these knots, as perhaps he, himself does, and proceeds accordingly. His attempts at wit are meant to help disguise that fact, but don't make up for the lack of knot making instructions. If you have a need for a list of possible projects, and do have other resources like Ashley's "Book of Knots" or "The Marlinspike Sailor" you may get a little from Pawson's book. As other reviews have stated, this is not for the average person - I consider myself fairly well versed, having owned a small craft for many years, and still wouldn't have made this purchase if I had seen its contents beforehand. The best part of the book is the cover photo which shows Pawson looking very much like the Ancient Mariner, but that isn't worth the price of this book, unfortunately.

This handy little pocket size paperback is not so much a detailed knot-tying book as it is a project guide and jumping off point for your own takes and projects. I thought it might be more knot detailed, but it is more project detailed. But the key knots are illustrated and explained. They are not the most step-detailed illustrations as some are brief and I needed additional reference or practice maybe, and they are black & white, but this book as a reference or accompaniment to your other knot-tying books is well worth it. It is what it says, Knot Craft. It is all making useful and pretty things from rope. From lanyards, to bellropes, to two types of boatfenders, to lots of other nautical related, and other ways applied, projects it is truly a nice addition, if just for creative purposes and some history. I have already made a great deal of the projects and am very pleased learned the fancy/decorative knots the book does show. I truly gained alot of knowledge and insight from the knots, projects, splicing, rope types, ropework tool synopsis/review (fids, marlinspikes, serving mallets, etc,) and his words/advice. Des Pawson is truly a master knot-tyer and ropeworker and his projects and the text and stories accompanying them speak that truth. It is a nice little read and perfect for a ropework kit, when you need something for reference or inspiration. I keep it on hand in my bag with my ropework tools with several other books and it is great. I like I can even easily take it with me if I am on the go.

First of all, I don't understand "D. Hill's" review of this book, as it is my favorite (and I have ALL the well known books on the subject of knots, from the great Ashley Book of Knots to Stuart Grainger's books, Hervey Garrett Smith's, Geoffrey Budworth's,etc., etc.) and full of "recipes" for different decorative and useful objects instead of just how to tie particular knots (which this book also does). I even used it as a guide to make all my Christmas presents last year! From front door mats to key fob stocking stuffers to fenders for a friend's boat. I turned the binocular strap into an eyeglass holder for my grandmother (as well as for it's intended purpose for a friend), made the square knot belt for my brother, made the bell rope for a light pull cord for myself, a set of place mats, glass coasters and napkin rings out of the ocean plait mat and some turk's heads and covered my niece's car steering wheel with French whipping!ALL of the projects were easy to follow with the instructions as well as the superb drawings that made the knots more clear than even Hervey Garrett Smith's excellent artwork (and anyone who has The Marlinspike Sailor in their library knows what a statement THAT is!).I highly recommend this book and hope that Des produces another that comes even half as good as this one is.

My purpose for purchasing the book was use in Erotic Macrame. This book gives me a better array of knots and their uses to study and possibly implement.

Des Pawson is a master of his Craft and his books are a must-have.

Great book! The diagrams are well layer out and easy to follow. The projects are certainly those any Sailor looking to begin in knotwork will be interested in.

Don't get me wrong I have plenty of other knot books with beautiful pictures of master knot work, but no mention of how to duplicate it. I was very glad to have Another knot book beside me since this one wasn't to clear on building the individual knots.

Karen R.Koenig again does a great job with reasonable strategies on how to help yourself is you have any weight issues, or eating disorders. It can be used as a tool to help clients if you are a therapist, but it is written in easy, accessible language to anyone who wants to use a self help book to learn how to eat healthier, instead of "mindless binging", or to stop using food as a way to self sooth, such as eating when stressed, sad, angry. It helps a person by using extremely easy charts to start to become more aware of identifying WHAT they may have been feeling at a particular time of the day, and HOW they responded with eating habits. This makes a person STOP, and THINK about their habits, and offers specific ways to combat food addiction/eating disorders. Highly recommended. Karen.R. Koenig is a very seasoned therapist in treating easting disorders, and has an excellent reputation.

My therapist recommended it and it helps so so so much. I m much better at stopping and feeling, letting the emotions pass through and avoiding an overeating session. Is it a bit time consuming? Yes... but really? you can't put in 1 hour every so often to better your health and your LIFE? come on now.

I am a licensed therapist and have used this book for some of my clients who struggle with emotional eating. Some parts are helpful but I feel the book is repetitive with some of the information.

I am half way through it. Trying to fix my emotional eating issues. It has been helpful. I have not used it every day , but as I get to it. Its been helpful and helped me realize I am not "broken", but dealing with a lot of issues that have been ingrained in the brain so it takes time to undo. be patient with yourself

This is a great little workbook for the person suffering with eating disorders due to emotions. The problem with this book, and its ilk, is that, without the guidance of a therapist, it is very unlikely that the person who will benefit from doing the work in the workbook will actually be motivated enough to do the work. In conjunction with a therapist, or some sort of therapeutic intervention, this can be a great tool in the effort to overcome emotional eating.

A clear explanation of the relationship between what the author calls “disordered eating” and emotions. A kind, non judgmental approach with relevant and timely exercises (not physical) to incorporate the material and begin to change your way of thinking about thoughts, feelings and food.

Outstanding workbook! Gives you some excellent tools in dealing with unhealthy food behaviors. The book requires much more than simply reading it. It has a lot of exercises that are outstanding in helping you understand your behaviors associated with food and how to change the negative ones.

This is a very easy to follow self-help book. I plan on using it for eating disorder clients as adjunctive to therapy but would be appropriate for anyone who has issues with their relationship with food and especially those with a disconnect between their feelings and using food as a coping skill.

been a long time fan of alita since i found it in the mid nineties on vhs.

I love the series from a long time ago and was catching up, still a good read.

What happened with this volume? Looks like the author wanted to END the series for some reason (boredom, pursue other projects, etc).I just hope he will retake the series and give it a decent closure that this series deserve (not this one of course).

Yeah I'm confused. 19 volumes to arrive at this? ZOTT achieved what? I don't even call this an ending and feel partly cheated due to the obvious presented open ended possibilities.

Pretty good tho didnt expect this to be final. Wonder if there will be more to come someday soon?

In this the final volume of the long, long running Battle Angel Alita/Last Order series the focus remains on the characters left behind on Earth, characters barely seen since the original series wrapped up in the 1990s. They journey across the wastelands of Earth and make their way to space trying to find Alita's fate.It's nice to see closure for some of the characters who made the original run so memorable and honestly if this was not the last volume I'd love it. But there's almost nothing of Alita in it and it makes the long (long, long, long, long) ZOT Tournament and space storyline seem even more of a waste of time.The book leaves things wide open for a sequel but at this point I'm not sure I would care.Kishiro seems to have lost all focus, wandering where ever he feels like at the moment but never developing his stories or characters. While entertaining ideas emerge from time to time, the whole Last Order encore has felt like a pale shadow of the original run. I started reading Battle Angel Alita in the mid-90s and now as it lurches to a close almost 20 years later I kind of wish it had ended with the original run.EDIT - Since I wrote this another sequel has appeared, Battle Angel Alita Mars Chronicles and it's actually pretty good. It more or less ignores all of Last Order though, making this 19 book series even more superfluous.
